And the colour in diffuse slot is 100% black? Strange, I was sure there is some diffuse in that material. :)

Rawa, the way you described it, you probably wouldn't get bright spots and the top visible end of the tube but this could be probably fixed some other way.

Looks like putting CoronaLights inside the tubes at the place where the tube meets the ceiling is a pretty efficient way but I can't imagine doing this with thousands of tubes on a curvy surface. Maybe with some scripting magic.

Here is a quick test with caustics enabled and disabled. Without caustics the tubes don't cast shadows so it looks bad. Basically it is possible but I would try to fake it some way. Maybe don't make holes in the ceiling and put a CoronaLight inside the tube? Or change material of the top and bottom faces of the tube to CoronaLightMtl so that you can put custom colour on them?

Can you show your glass material setup?

The ashtray looks unnatural, it is too bright. Possibly diffuse component in glass material. Or is it intentional?

Most book papers use 80g/m2 or less for pages, the thickness is literally irrepresentable with physical units in CGI, because it's sub <0.1mm. Sure, carton boards (400+ g/m2) are different league.
Regardless, thick papers would be nightmare to animate in flipping fashion.

Rawalanche's advice is sound. Still, 2sided material is convenient way to have completely different material characteristic on each side, but, not any sort of priority for anyone I guess.
I can imagine a situation when such setup looks strange when viewing the book from its side. But we don't even know what exactly Juzwa is trying to achieve so let's not theorize and get back to topic. :) Also, I didn't want to sound mean.

Tried with shell mofifier, and assigning new materal to new faces, but however id doesn't work (even i scanline, i think its  just an unfinished and bugged feature).
What? If you make a plane and assign shell modifier to it, in shell options you have possibility to assign different material IDs to your new faces (inner, outer, side). This HAS TO work in both Corona and scanline. It's not a bug, it's unskilfulness. :P

For flipping pages, I would probably use geometry with thickness. But like Rawalanche said, using single-sided geometry with translucency could also bring nice effects.

Cool!

I wouldn't use HD cache in this situation and I probably wouldn't set LSM to 2. This scene was simple enough to be rendered with default settings but you could probably change them a bit to get slightly faster result. Anyway, good work!

I really liked how it looks on one of the "raw" renders at the end (the smaller one at the top) - like real secale (rye?) on a stormy day. :)

Max 2014 here, I have no problems with typing values like 0,987654.

update: aaah, ok, looks like the results are indeed the same

GI/AA balance: 32
Light samples multiplier: 72

This means during each pass you get:
-1 AA sample + 32 GI samples for indirect light
-1 AA sample + 32*72=2304 samples for direct light

All clear?

Now reset everything to default values (actions>reset settings) and don't touch anything if are not sure what it does. :)

Also, if you are using displacement, don't use "world size" option. Always use "screen size".

Lighting looks pretty nice and I'm in love with that carpet - it can be made without any fancy modifiers or scripts, right? Sweet!
But there are some imperfections like the blocky pillows, weak textures or diffuse component in the glass on the table (looks like it's dusty).

These looks good already. I'd just add subtle bump to them.

Will you make softcover books too?

Nice. I love how subtle surface imperfection brakes down reflections. Much much nicer that currently over-used effect of using drastically contrasted dirt/concrete map in reflection/glossy slot//russian style.
I am guessing this is a photo. :)

-the guy sitting on the ledge forgot about one shoe
-there is definitely some ugly texturing
-too much contrast and sharpness

But you must have put lots of work into it, just polish some details.

I think they look ok. Just two comments:
-looks like they are all equally thick
-the block of text on last image looks ugly, I think you should justify it
