Any ideas why I cant see some of my render nodes ram usage in the view ports DR tab? Attached image. I am assuming its maybe a port or firewall issue maybe? Let me know if anyone has any ideas!

Is it actually rendering? Are these both render nodes (ie one isn't the main machine), and if so, do you have extra render node licenses, and are they available according to the license manager, and is the machine able to get the license (e.g. is online, etc.)?

Hey Tom thanks for relying! Yes they are both setup as render nodes, both are working and running renderings with licenses. They've always worked fine but was just curious what the reason is for not being able to see some of the info. The machine that does not display ram usage also needs to be manually input into the DR list, search LAN does not make it appear. So thats why my assumption is something with ports or firewalls but I am not entirely sure what port I need to tell IT to open

TY for the extra info and confirmations! I will have to leave that one to the support and devs as it moves beyond my level of knowledge; interesting that it is the one that needs to be added manually, like you that leaves me wondering if it is not able to respond to requests to info like the memory being used etc.

Hi,

Do you have the DRServer application allowed in windows firewall?

Thanks,

Rowan

Thanks TomG and Rowmanns for the responses! The outbound and incoming show the DrServer as an exception on the render node. The windows firewall itself is off as well on both the master and slave.

Hi,

Here are some general troubleshooting steps which you can try to fix your DR issue:

1. Are you using some VPN software? If so, please stop using it and make sure you are using BB/DR on a "classic" local network.
2. Disable any antivirus software you are using on all PCs (including Windows Defender and Firewall) - this is just to check if the issue is related to this software. You can then turn it back on.
3. Add custom inbound/outbound rules in Windows Firewall—https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/articles/4528128298257-Creating-custom-inbound-and-outbound-rules-for-the-DR-Server-application-
4. Make sure on each computer there is only one instance of 3ds Max, DR server, Backburner. If there are multiple instances running at the same time (for example two 3dsmax.exe processes), some issues may appear.
5. Do not render from a perspective view—use some kind of camera, preferably a Corona Camera.
6. Open your scene, go to Render Setup, and deselect the "lock" icon in the top right corner. Click on any viewport, then click on the viewport you want to render. Select the "lock" icon in Render Setup again. Such a reset of the rendered view sometimes helps.
7. Disable IPv6 - https://medium.com/@JockDaRock/disabling-ipv6-on-network-adapter-windows-10-5fad010bca75
8. Go to Windows’ Services list and make sure "Function Discovery Provider Host" and "Function Discovery Resource Publication" are started. Set them to an automatic start.
9. Make sure you have network discovery enabled - https://www.isunshare.com/windows-10/turn-on-or-off-network-discovery-in-windows-10.html
10. Make sure you are using exactly the same 3ds Max version on all of the computers taking part in the distributed rendering (note: even using different update/hotfix versions may cause problems, for example, 3ds Max 2020.3 vs 2020.2).
