[Max] Daily Builds / Material Converter unusable
« on: 2021-04-06, 08:12:02 »
The latest daily build for Max really f**ks up the scene materials when using the corona converter. It's basically unusable now whereas previously it worked perfectly...

I figure it's got something to do with the converter being a bit confused about when to apply metal/non-metal to legacy materials.

I can show some example if you wish, but hopefully this has already been discussed or discovered?

Hi,
it is a quixel megascans material with some samll modifications.
I'm attaching material setup.

What kind of GUI is that material editor?

Pretty sure it's the C4D Corona Material Editor.........

Where's the wind coming from? (The interior scenes, when the curtains blow).

Seems odd, as I'm pretty sure those windows don't open...

tip; put these all in 1 thread please. Pointless waste of time for you and us to see 3 images from the same project in 3 different posts.

Thanks!

[Max] I need help! / Re: Exclude from fog?
« on: 2021-04-01, 10:16:44 »
Just use a Corona Distance node to have no fog near the mountains. Should be pretty easy if I understand you correctly...?

Tip; don't use the mountains themselves as the distance object, but a large primitive sphere/box which is non-renderable - this should save on 'distance' calculation time as presumably the mountains might be a bit geometry heavy

General CG Discussion / Re: Rendering Price Calculator
« on: 2021-03-29, 17:01:36 »
Now I have very hard times to get the clients, I don't know why? Is this the quality? The market? The competition (but we have competition everywhere)? The market structure?

I can't answer this question directly unfortunately. (Though I do think that yes, in Ukraine, you have a lot of competition - many many good renderers seem to come from Ukraine)

However, if I can offer a little bit of advice: your website is a bit of a mess. Professionalism is key in any industry and you're marketing yourself primarily with your work and your website, the latter of which isn't doing you any favors. Clean it up, present yourself a bit more professionally :)

My comment: multiple those prices by about 5 times.

That's beneficial to you and everyone else in the community.

"We now render the image in 32x32 pixel buckets"

it looks not good.. where can I turn it off?
Hi,

Thanks for the feedback, currently you can't turn it off. But we are working on a fix so that it will become less noticeable. Stay tuned.

Rowan

Just asking out of pure curiosity but I'm wondering, is it possible to have the first couple of passes render oldschool style and then the rest do the new bucket thing?

What does it matter? It's not affecting the final render, it's visible for only the pre-comp anyway and if it results in faster renders then it's certainly worthwhile.

Downloaded and installed the latest daily yesterday (22 March, I think?).

This isn't a bug per se, but suddenly I see this blocky progression happening in my renders (most noticeably only when it first starts but the progressive nature of the render also looks different than it used to). Note: a remove region render is responsible for the obvious shape in this screenshot.

What's changed to suddenly start this different behavior? Is it expected?

"We now render the image in 32x32 pixel buckets. 5% speedup on average, up to 15% in some scenes."
From the changelog :) https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php?topic=30876.msg183142#msg183142

Interesting, thanks for the reply!

[Max] Feature Requests / Re: The most wanted feature?

The winner is - GPU/Hybrid rendering  :) 51 votes.

It's never gonna happen

522
This happened to me, but in Max. It seems to only happen once or twice after updating to a daily (maybe 1 month ago) then it stopped happening completely and all worked as exptected...

Of course, I reported it first, then couldn't reproduce it *facepalm*

Hardware / Re: Personal render farm that is not local
« on: 2021-03-22, 15:17:44 »
I might be over-simplifying this a bit, so apologies if this isn't helpful and/or if I've completely misunderstood your query:

I've often thought about this. The way I would do it is to have a 'shared' PC which is connected (physically) to a network and set of PC's, ie your farm. So I guess the shared PC must be in the same space as the render farm.

This shared PC could be accessible though something simple like Chrome Remote Desktop, or maybe something more secure.

That way anyone can log onto the shared PC, send off their render file and have it automatically upload to something like Dropbox.

To my eye it looks like you have double surfaces going on? Could very well be wrong, though of course.

General CG Discussion / Dumb question...
« on: 2021-03-11, 08:26:53 »
This might seem like a bit of a newbie question, but it's always had me a little confused:

Why do I often see so many 3D render breakdowns (stills and animation) add a reflection (and/or refraction etc) pass on top of the beauty pass?

Ie; why is the artist adding more reflections on top of the presumably already physically accurate render? Is this purely an artistic decision? Is there some trick I'm unaware of? Is this a common must-do in 3D art? Or is the artist just trying to improve the way the reflections look, as they didn't quite nail them in the original render?

I see so many break-downs that add this, and in all honestly it doesn't seem to add much to the image as a whole... an example from today:

Much obliged for any enlightenment!
