Hardware / Re: New budget PC: i9 12900 or Ryzen 9 5950x?
« on: Yesterday at 22:47:30 »
Thank you guys for all your answers. There's still something I quite don't understand: Why is it that some CPUs like the 12900 perform worse than 5950x when they both have the same amount of cores (16)? Same goes for the new 7950x which is supposed to perform better than 5950x but again, they both have the same mount of cores.

I have no idea what happened. Email notifications has just stopped working for me.

Any idea what most be going on?

It considers the pivot of the element, not its bounding box. So any element whose pivot is outside of the defined area will disappear (grass blade growing on a plane will be visible, grass blade growing outside of plane will disappear). We may consider the bounding box or or other methods of trimming in future versions too.

The problem I see with this method is that in many cases it won't give us the desired result. As long as the pivot point of a element is inside the scattering area, the tool won't delete that element.

I think that having an additional option to use some objects from the scene (like the sidewalk) as the "trimmers" would be a better solution than just relying on the pivot of the elements.

Hardware / New budget PC: i9 12900 or Ryzen 9 5950x?
« on: 2022-10-01, 17:30:58 »
Hey guys,

I'm helping a friend to build a new PC for 3ds Max and Corona. Right now he's trying to choose between a i9 12900 or Ryzen 9 5950x.
Which one do you think would be a better and why? Any help will be highly appreciated.

[Max] I need help! / How can I make a CD material?
« on: 2022-09-30, 05:50:07 »
I've been trying to recreate a CD material using Feodor settings from this post (reply #174):

However, I must be missing something since the result I'm getting is not the same. Would you give me a hand with this?

he wasn't logged in for 15 months

What ever happened to Dubcat, by the way?

Two scatters? Each with the same distance set, but one has an offset? You could even mirror the scatter object first and set its pivot point to the middle? Would that work?

Great ideas. Worked like a charm.

I just installed 3ds Max 2023.2 update this morning and what do you know, the new array modifier lets you achieve what you need very easily. Pretty powerful tool i must say.
This is gold. I have to install Max 2023. Thank you!

And thanks to everybody for all the suggestions.

Personally, I'll try to avoid such super high-core machines in future because of this.

Hey Juraj!

As mentioned in other pots, some of my clients come to me with really challenging projects where fog, lights and caustics play a mayor role. In those cases I've found my old 5960x to be really slow even for previews. Because of that, I've been looking forward to get a new workstation in the hope of improving my render times significantly. Initially, 3970x/3990x were among my first options.

However, after your latest posts, I've started to wonder if this would be a good idea. As you have mentioned, these high-core machines are not the best option for building our scenes, specially in 3ds Max.

So I'm kind of lost right. Since the latest CPUs will work great for most of the tasks but won't give me the render times I need, what do you think would be the best solution? Having a high-core machine just for rendering and a different one as main workstation?

This is where I'd really wish Corona was GPU based so I didn't have to face this dilemma.

I also have problems with Chaos Scatter not updating distribution changes on viewport or IR (see attached video)

I'm trying to distribute some chairs using Scatter grid pattern on a rectangle spline. However, changes in the spacing parameter are not updated. I have to pause and restart IR in order for the changes to appear on the viewport and render. Same happens when I move the rectangle spline. Scattered objects stay the same. Once again I have to restart IR to see the changes.

I'm on Max 2022.2 and Corona 2022-09-26.exe

Small bug (I think) in the build from 9-27.  If you have IR running in a viewport, and you select your camera, goto Modify tab > Tone Mapping, say 'Copy from Global' and the override check box checks itself, and you goto 'Edit', it has no effect on the exposure until you restart IR.

Hopefully that explanation is clear.  Thanks!

Same problem here.

Hey guys!

I really need you help on this one. I'm trying to array two types of elements on a bunch of curved metallic tubes as shown on the attached image. These will be a bunch of really big chandelier on an auditorium. Objects must be scattered perpendicular to the normals of the tube and only on the sides of it, not on the top or bottom. They should also follow the ordered shown in the image: red, green, red, green, etc.

Is this a work for Chaos Scatter of should I look for something else?

This article has a very brief reference to the 'order' but only in relation to the triplanar map.  All of the other examples in the article show the randomiser used at the end of the flow, so it is quite confusing

Yeah, quite confusing :c

You need to swap places trilanar with randomizer. Correct order is uvwrandomizer->triplanar->material. But i'm not sure if that's the cause of the issue, because that mistake is in both materials. Other than that, everything looks correct.

Is there any info about this in the Corona documentation? I've been having similar problems when not connecting maps in the right order.

On the other hand I wish it was possible to connect these maps in any order without this being a problem.

Also, as mentioned in other posts, it would be great if we could connect a single ranomizer/triplanar map for all textures instead of needing one for each map. Just like in Vray.

Sounds like I'll probably be OK by just leaving the default System Units (inches) alone.

I'm curious to know what kind of problems will arise when using 3DSky models in my scenes. Isn't Max supposed to convert units for imported objects, including values on modifiers and textures?

Cool! Thanks for the info.

By the way, I'm not getting notifications from Corona forum via email anymore. Any idea why this could be happening or how to fix it?
