not at all, I just use the coronalMTL with some translucency

the braids shader was a coronamtl with zero opacity, but with volumetric and scattering to give the "cloud" effect

How did you map the volumetric scattering to make it look like fibers?

So it's scattered geometry with the shader he described

No way that's not scattered geometry, otherwise that would be a billion of polys.

and what he said really doesn't explain anything (corona mtl + corona color (set to black) in opacity + enabling volumetrics and scattering) how would that end up looking like those fibers shown in the render?
