Off-Topic / Do you integrate Corona in your design process?
« on: 2021-03-06, 00:24:33 »
Or other rendering software?

This is for all architects, engineers and designers in general. Lately, I find myself relying heavily on interactive rendering during the design process. It's feedback I can rely on in order to make spatial and visual decisions, as opposed to simple drawings. Does "simpler" software (or even a sheet of paper) suffice your needs for planning your projects? Or is Max/C4D the bulk of it, your go-to to create?

Hey, everyone!

Questionable composition and architecture aside (yes, this is an actual place), can anybody help me understand why I dislike this so much? Any direction on this shot's strengths and weaknesses would be quite appreciated. Thanks!

My first post here, any criticism is very welcome.

The architecture itself is still an ongoing project, but I rendered a preview showing this stone finish. Turns out the gaps are too wide and my usage of RoundEdges didn't turn out as expected (are there any limitations with RoundEdges and Multi/Sub-Object materials?).

If time permits I'll be tweaking the finer details. There's also a reference photo.

Thanks!

I've been reliant on LightMix to adjust HDRI intensity, especially with exteriors, and it somehow feels like bad practice. Am I losing dynamic range somehow?

Are there any downsides to relying on it too much to light the scene?

Thought I'd ask, since I'm admittedly not as knowledgeable as most of the folks here when it comes to what's going on under the hood.

I haven't posted this as a bug report, because I have absolutely no idea what started triggering this. But has this happened to anyone else?

All of a sudden, when right-clicking any CoronaMtl in the Slate Material Editor that has a CoronaDistance map, Max locks up for good (in this specific scene). I'm using the map mostly for Refl. Glossiness, Diffuse and one or two cases in the Displacement slot.

Not really a total deal-breaker, as it works okay as long as I remove the CoronaDistance node before interacting with the material, but I have to be extremely cautious. I might be misusing it at some point, since it didn't happen before.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to the scene at the moment.

Using Max 2018, Win 8.1 and Corona 1.6 hf3

I can't for the life of me get this right in Corona. With HDRI in a brighter scene, I believe I can get passable results, though admittedly not realistic (see attached image).

But whenever I try and set a pitch dark environment, I can't balance the lighting. Materials start looking incredibly dull. Altering the EV leads me nowhere.

Here's a general example everyone knows by now. I'm not necessarily going for this look, but of course we all aim to accomplish animation as good as this. It's very simple, but what did they do here regarding environment?

Do you customarily use Reflections override for this? What light size and directionality to use?

  • Corona 1.6, 3ds Max 2016
  • Windows 8.1

Had happened before, but just happened twice in a row, when configuring ZDepth.

3ds Max froze while I was setting Min Z (white) and then pressed Tab in order to move to the next item.

Minor annoyance, but dangerous if autosave is set to higher intervals. Don't know if it's applicable to other elements in the UI.
