Hardware / Re: New mobile workstation
« on: 2020-05-10, 18:26:05 »
I want to mount a mobile workstation similar to yours with the cerberus case. I will take her in a backpack on weekends to another home. How has your experience been with this case?

I have a different case, the Cerberus X was not easy to find and I was in a hurry to assemble the workstation.
The case I'm using is a Coolermaster Masterbox TD500 and so far I'm satisfied. I like it and seems well built, but is not something you can put in a backpack.

We did that one year ago, and the survey results ended with more people saying that the photo was the render :)

I like to check these "real or fake" surveys out of curiosity and for fun, but unfortunately most of them make no sense at all. Most even lame renders look "real" in small resolution. In most cases to find out if you're dealing with CGI or photo all you need to do is zoom in.

What was the resolution of compared pictures, were they the same size? It's not an accusation, just asking.

In the comments there were the two images in higher resolution.
I'm attaching them here.
But keep in mind that the survey was made for fun. I made the image in order to test and showcase the new caustics feature when it was released.
If you look at the images in high res, is quite obvious which one is the photo :)

edit: or maybe we should do a "photo or corona" game, to be fair to corona.

« on: 2020-05-02, 22:14:45 »
@cjwidd - Thank you, it would be great if you can share with me. Your scene looks amazing!

@sprayer - I will check caustics topic on the forum, thank you. But I am not sure if I understood your comment fully. The sunlight should normally give the colored shadows, right? Also, there are other interior lights in the scene.

What I am trying to do is to experiment with light and reflections on the walls in the most realistic way for some art projects. Do you think there are better options for this other than 3dMax+Corona?

As already said, you need to make sure that the sunlight or any other artifical lights are pointing directly to the objects that has to reflect colored light. And of course enable caustics in the performance tab.

Hardware / Re: Inaccessible boot device after bios update

It seems that I already have the Microsoft drivers for the NVMe controller. (see attachment) Is from there that I should re-install it?
I've never done this, so I'm not sure how to search for different drivers than the ones already installed..

Yeah this Windows bug, unrelated to bios really (even if that can become trigger), old as the Windows 7 itself.

I had it last week with file-server simply due to accidently switching SATA connectors..

Check in bios boot order, see if everything looks to be in order after the bios upgrade. There really isn't single solution, once you managed to enter in Windows, re-install SSD driver (doesn't really matter if the NVMe driver is from Microsoft or Samsung one, they perform identically but at different occasion each one can be problematic. I use the Microsoft one.)

In the bios settings the boot order seems correct. The m.2 drive is already set as 1st boot option.

From where should I find the ssd drivers to reinstall in windows? Can you provide some links?
My nvme drive is a western digital, but on their website I can't find the drivers..
Thanks!

Hardware / Inaccessible boot device after bios update
« on: 2020-05-01, 17:49:37 »
I updated the bios of my Asus ROG Strix x570-e Gaming to the last available, since Substance Painter was telling me that my old bios was known to create errors with the app.

The procedure was successful, but at the restart of the pc a BSOD appears with this error: inaccessible boot device.

The pc then reboots itself and asks me to do an automatic recovery of windows. After the recovery, the PC manages to enter Windows, everything works, but the Asus Suite 3 app crashes immediately. I am attaching screenshots of the error.

But the real problem is that if I turn off the pc, the next time I switch it on the bsod appears again, I have to restore windows, then it works fine.

Could it be a problem of corrupted system files? Should I format and reinstall windows again?
I never had a problem updating bios on all my computers since 15 years! It's crazy..

I already tried to load the default settings in the bios, nothing change..
Is not possible to go back to my previous BIOS because is too old and on the asus drivers page there is this statement: *You will not be able to downgrade your BIOS after updating to this BIOS version
Of course I tried, but it doesn't work..

Here is my pc config:

Windows 10 Pro 1909

Ryzen 9 3950X
Asus ROG Strix X570-E Gaming
128GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200Mhz
RTX 2070 Super
System disk: WD 500GB NVMe I think the problem is here..
Crucial 1TB SSD
2 Seagate Barracuda 2TB in Raid 1 for storage and backup
Noctua NH U12A
Coolermaster V850 Platinum

Let me know if you have any suggestions
Thanks

Little update.
The bike is starting to look like a bike :)

I modeled the cassette using the iToo Clone plugin as suggested by romullus. It's really helpful. The only problem is that the teeth tends to scale a bit and they will never match the chain links as you can see in the test render.
I'll try to find a way to fix that, but before I want to model all the last components.

As always, comments and suggestions are always welcome.

For anyone who might be interested, we just published a big project all about caustics!

https://www.recentspaces.com/lathampools

Testament, I think, to how awesome they work in Corona. We're really excited to see the new changes in caustics and PhoenixFD/foam too, in v6.

Amazing images!
Did you tweaked the shaders in some way to optimize the computation/remove unwanted fireflies?

I would try to do this as procedurally as i can. Something like this.

Nice! Thanks for the hint. I never tried that plugin from itoo.
In the beginning I thought about using railclone, but couldn't figured out how to use it for this purpose.
I'll take a look at Clone.

After a few days of stop, I'm back modeling the last components of the bike.

Since I'm not an expert in modeling, I'd like to know if there's a way to optimize and speed up the process of modeling the cassette:

Each cog has a different amount of teeth, so I'm starting from a cylinder with the same amount of segments as teeth, in order to model the first one and then clone it.
The problem is that to add some final details, I need the entire cog, and it can be really slow for the bigger cogs.
I need to practice to see if I can add all the details I want into one tooth and then clone it.

Any suggestions? How would you approach this kind of modeling?

Thanks!

[Max] I need help! / Re: 360° images workflow

Thanks Squeakybadger and Maru.

Another question, would you keep active the depth of field in camera or it create a strange effect?
The images I'm rendering are exterior visualisations of a small villa, so the DOF will be very subtle anyway.

[Max] I need help! / 360° images workflow
« on: 2020-04-17, 13:04:56 »
Hi, I have some questions about the best workflow to render 360° images as cubemaps.
A part from setting the camera and the aspect ratio correctly, is there any other thing to change?

For example:
_is denoise ok to use or it may add artifacts on borders?
_Image filter has to be set to None or it can be left to High quality?

Thanks!

The wheels are almost finished.
For the tyres I used a displacement map generated in Subtstance Designer with the correct patter of the Vittoria Mezcal tyre. I'll add later more details, logos and name on the tanwall side.

My background is architectural visualization, so I'd like to know if is a correct approach to use a displacement map for tyres or if should be better to model them. I hope not, it would be a nightmare for me :)

Like this, but I don't know how it's done in 3dsMax. Perhaps with script like this: http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/average-copy-border-vertex-normals

(The picture shows two separate meshes, there is no geometry change or chamfer, connection,etc..)

That's interesting, but seems a bit too much work.

Today I'm going to model the wheels. Starting from the disk brake attachment on the hubs.
On the disk I added the dirt left by the brake pads on the outer ring.
To do that I made a custom texture in substance designer. I attached the screenshot of the graph if you're interested.
