Title: Audio knob anisotropy
Post by: jesusginard on 2020-02-06, 12:13:50
Hi guys,

I'm in my first stages with Corona and I'm in love with it!
It's working great for me, the only thing it's not working for me like in the Physical render is anisotropy on audio knobs.

As you can see in the attached videos, the Physical one is more accurate since the reflections shouldn't rotate (they don't in the real world). If you then see the Corona one, the highlights rotate at all frames.

I'm also attaching the material settings.

The only way I've found to create this radial anisotropy is by having Glossiness less than 1.0, anisotropy at more than 0.5 and having a radial map on the "rotation of anisotropic highlights".
The problem is this, that the highlights rotate when rotating the knob and they should stay in the same place.

Do you know how can I do to create a realistic radial anisotropy animation?

Thanks so much!

Hi there, Unfortunately, it is not possible. Currently, it can only be done with Cinema's anisotropy shader/renderer. We won't give up that easy though, a search for a workaround continues. ;)

Oh noooo! That's an essential part of my work since I do audio plug-ins.
Damn! I hope the Corona guys implement this.

As an aside while we look into workarounds, what audio plugins? I use a lot of VSTs and things myself (assuming you mean those kinds of plugins) so I am curious if I happen to be using one or at least know of it :)

Everythiing at Wavesfactory.com :)
Maybe you use Trackspacer or Cassette?

Ah I don't have any of those - very nice interfaces though, I love the look! :) We'll get back on topic as soon as we have any news (I did do some testing today on a workaround but there was something strange there, and we'll have to pick up on that again tomorrow).

Cool, thanks! :)

Send me an e-mail and I'll send you a license for Cassette in order to thank you !

If we get it working for you, I might take you up on that! But let's see where it goes with getting it fixed first, to be fair :)

I was wondering if there are any news on this?

No news, yet, sorry - for reference, (Internal ID=463248215) is where we are tracking it, you can use that number if you are contacting us by any route other than this forum thread.

Hi There is a topic that I answered that could help you. Its not perfect just a workaround/hack but hopefully it can help or lead to a solution c:

Creating the anisotropic effect isn't the problem here, it's the behavior of how it looks after being animated.

My thought was if the anisotropic effect is not working in the corona material then by using the fake/workaround method in my example it could be animated. Since it only using a gradient and not the anisotropic part of the corona material.

Assuming you're using a radial gradient for the anisotropic rotation (as I would). Can you not animate the gradient angle in the opposite direction to the rotation of the knob using set driver>set driven with a bit of maths in Xpresso? Not able to try now but might work?

Hi guys,

I just tried it again using a basic cylinder and I think I found a clue to what's going on.

If the cylinder doesn't have a fillet it doesn't work. When you add a fillet it suddenly works but there is a strange circle in the center.
That circle behaves erratically when rotating (that's the source of the topic), but the rest of it behaves fine.
The weird thing is that circle changes in radius when changing the fillet steps (not fillet radius). It goes gradually smaller the less steps you have.
Until you reach the number 1 of steps and the whole thing falls apart.

I made a video to illustrate.

Hopefully this will help the Corona team to find the source of the issue.

Adding some kind of bump map should help with that "hole" issue.

This works for a still image, but when animating the center is still moving erratically.

Ahhhh, good point. I completely forgot it is to be animated. Hmmm

Hi,

Checking to see if this issue has been resolved in the upcoming Corona Render 6.
I find myself going back to Physical just because this feature is not working. It's that important for me and it's sad that I can't take advantage of Corona just for this small issue.
