We will start implementing Corona into C4D soon. If you would like to help, we would appreciate if you know about some good pages with C4D resources - example scenes, tutorials, reference guides, or ideally, some references for programmers - sample plugin implementations, development discussions. I don't also know how open are C4D devs to plugin developers - do you know if there is some option to get our specific API questions answered?

I never liked the Mental Ray :)
Previously I worked in 3D max and even there used Vray, because I was not satisfied with either the quality and speed of Mental Ray. There are too many options, but at the rate they have virtually no effect.

And after they bought Nvidia, they are very poorly developed.

Really glad this is going to happen.  The option for C4D users right now is native engine or Vray.  With Corona's speed it should be really nice.

I tried the demo of Mental Ray for C4D and found it was terrible.  Calculating the light for a simple room took forever.

There is MAXON Plugin Developer Conference every year, this year in June 13th, Cologne, Germany. More info here:

http://c4dprogramming.wordpress.com/2013/03/28/maxon-developer-kitchen-2013/

It is free of charge and covers plugin development, new CINEMA 4D development and discussion with other developers. Usually you have to sign NDA as some information may not be published to general public.  Hosted by Bernd Lutz, MAXON product manager. If you want to apply, please write email to Bernd to b_lutz [at] maxon [dot] net  (you can CC me to szkandera at digitalmedia(dot)cz so it does not get lost as Bernd is quite busy person)

Keep my fingers crossed,

Standa

EDIT: corrected date of the developer conference, it takes place in June 13th, not July 13th

Well in fact there is also Renderman-compliant engines, Maxwell Render, Octane Render, Fry-something, Thea Render, ...
But it's true C4D users mostly use native renderer or Vray. Most are looking for speed, and Corona could be well perceived.

For plugin programming, the official place to go is http://www.plugincafe.com/forum/default.asp
But there is also http://c4dprogramming.wordpress.com/ that is quite new and maintained by MAXON devs (amongst them is C4D-Jack, a former C4D plugin developer, and a very open guy). I think you could have quite some help from there.

In anyway, glad to see the C4D plugin being developed!

I use Maxwell with C4D, but desperately need something faster :)
Could You tell me, when approximately can we try the first alpha of Corona-C4D renderer?

This is great news! Vray for C4D is at the moment the fastest render engine in C4D, but its development process is super slow.
And it does not support deform motion blur & object motion blur (well.. object motion blur works - some how, but it has lots of bugs or what they say: "features".

I really want to see Corona for C4D with object, camera & deform motion blur features, at least it should be possible
to create full motion blur support because Mental ray for C4D already has it (but it is slow rendering engine), and Vray will add it to the next version (but, i guess we will see it after couple of years :).

Or just a thought of it still?

Meaning the C4D version is on hold?

One year was already a very long time. If now it's forever... =[

Fortunately we still have a bunch of good renderers (even Arnold has its C4D bridge on the way), but Corona seemed like such a nice renderer that this is a pity.

Ok, so there is the first test render with Corona for C4D. When can the general public get their hands on a copy to test or beta test? Will it be before the end of 2013? Any timeframe, release date, calendar?

What about the stand alone version? Where can we download it and try it with C4D? Is this possible?

I am very exited about this release with cinema 4D integration.
are you planing to do this for Mac and Windows? or your plans are only for Windows? I understand how hard to work on this type of app it is, so i thank you very much for your efforts.

For now there will be only windows, but I am sure I'll make multiplatform Corona version sometimes. I don't know when will the public C4D version be released, it is done as a student project, so the development is not as fast.

Thank for the answer and your great work on this app.
As a side note I think it is a great idea not to limit this render engine to only one 3D software, a la Fry render,( that it is slowing dying like Brazil render)  having a strong app that can be used in different 3D hosts and platform is a great advantage, and I truly believe if Corona keep growing the way it has it will be a strong alternative to several artist, Plus timing is very good now, with Autodesk almost abandoning Mental Ray and VRay new prices schedule there will be a lot of artist looking for decent alternatives in all platforms.
Well that's my opinion for what it is worth ;)

Hi there,
just discovered Corona and seems amazing.
I'm a C4D user happy to see new amazing things in my future. I can't wait to try it out and hopefully help testing.

Meanwhile keep us posted and thanks for the hard work!

Hi there,

since yesterday, I am also an upcomming Corona (for C4d) user by the recommendation of a (3dmax-) friend.
I checked for Corona some time ago, but there it was only for max and so I didn't follow it further as I am a C4d and Lightwave-user.
It would be very interesting to see and try a first alpha-version of Corona inside C4D.
C4D is widely spread among users, but has only 4 render-engines that are usefull so far.
Top is VrayforC4, no question. But as already said, the development is really slow and it takes months, sometimes years to get current features of the max-version lately ported to C4d.
Second place is now Octane which developed really fast in the last months with a good integration to C4d and is superfast and has a very affortable price, but has a complicated material system and no usable Skin-SSS for organic renderings.
Third place for me is Iray and Maxwell. The Iray-devs are nice guys, but also development is slow as they only port it over to C4D and therefore have no influence on developing Iray itself. Nice engine, good results, but regarding organic SSS-shaders it's very limited so far and no one knows if there comes something better or not.
Mental Ray , included with Iray, is no option for me.
Maxwell is , well, Maxwell. Nice results, but super, super slooooooooowwwww. And expensive too.
Not really the engine of anybodys first choice.

So, there is definetely space for a new render-engine in C4D.
From my longtime experience with all the high and low with the engines and their devs, I would recommend some simple rules if Corona for C4D wants to be a serious competitor for VrayforC4d in the future.
I know there are a lot of architectural guys out there and therefore, most engines are focused on their needs and demands and oftly made by devs who are in the architectural business like VrayforC4D.
But please remember that a lot of users like me , be they private users or professionals, are desperately looking for a usable engine for really realistic, fast and high quality ORGANIC renderings, like human skin for characters, scientific purposes (medical visualisation) etc..
So a suitable Skin-SSS shader is really a must (and I don't mean these shitty little blowed-up SSS milk and honey things that produce horrible results that the devs call then 'skin'). If you need an experienced user to help you with tests and feed back, I could be your man among with some other really good guys in that who I know.
We have a deep and longtime experience in developing good looking human skin results with almost all available render engines out there and can give professional feedback so things can be efficiently developed in a short time.
Furthermore, a good integration inside C4D is helpfull, meaning a fast working IPR and a viewport rendering like Vray provides. Both is needed.
The viewport rendering of portions defined by a frame made with the mouse/pen for fast preview of small areas and the IPR for the interactive overall result.
Then a good understandable material system with support for all C4D features and C4d-plugins (filter, layers etc.) is really recommended.
And last but not least, update frequency is crucial. Daily builts are a good idea to give people access to new features for tryouts in short time, regardless of the stability etc.
People want to see their feedback and new things integrated in the engine of their choice in short time, not in a year or so.
The last Vray-update took over a year and then, it was super-buggy. People where pissed off.

So, I whis Corona a good start with C4D and hope that you can avoid at least some of the typical faults that so far most of the new and promising engine-devs made to bring this promising looking render-engine to a suitable result that it deserves.

Good luck.

with Autodesk almost abandoning Mental Ray and VRay new prices schedule there will be a lot of artist looking for decent alternatives in all platforms.

I would say that at the very least Mental Ray in Max 2014/2015 has made big improvements with IBL and new sampling methods among others... But yes, it will always be behind the eight ball. But it is free and has as many render nodes as you want :)

I don't think there will be a huge amount of people leaving from Vray. Vray 3.0 has some great features hands down. I am loving Corona though!!!

As for having this on many apps, that is a good thing. Have to say 3ds Max is the right choice to start with though :)

I will test Corona plug for C4D with pleasure :)
I think there is a huge empty space for good and fast (and not very expensive) render engine for C4D. I hope Corona can fill this space.
I would buy Corona to C4D plugin if it will be possible :)

As long as it's not Vray 1.8 hah...that release was epic fail. I am starting to get into this render engine. Also maybe these questions have been answered but will there be something similar to DR (distribute rendering) or something that will work with TeamRender?

Thank you!

Yes really looking forward to seing this come to C4D. Im a long time Vray user and thought that I wouldn't even look at another renderer with vrays speed/quality ratio. But 9 out of 10 renders I see out of Corona are absolutely top notch, the quality of light, materials, internal tone mapping, speed and simplicity just seem to have the edge. What I love about vrayforc4d though is the ability to use both internal c4d shader and third party shaders as well as vray native ones (although only vray ones with DR - so I dont use DR!). Any chance we might be able to access the host app shaders with Corona at some stage? Looking forward to seeing this progress.

I understand that development of software is not a click button deal. but I wonder if this API is being develop as Student side gig? or as a real time framed development?
As much as we all love free stuff maybe if you charge a small amount for Max plugin and Cinema plug in you can finance a more consistent developing time.  Is not right to work for free, others rendering software are charging with even less features that the one's Corona has now.
Cinema 4D is a pretty decent user base to be considered.
In the middle I just wait patiently I guess.
Best regards.

I agree about monetising the plugin development in order to get a decent programmer on it full time. I have no problem with paying for corona and then a separate fee for the host app plugin if we can guarentee a quality plugin that gets updated quickly, and it should help take the pressure off you guys making the magic.

At the very least just open up a donation account on paypal or what not so we can fuel the project with cash and then in return get updates would be enough too.

But the best would be pre-purchasing or something!

Hi there,
just discovered Corona and seems amazing.
I'm a C4D user happy to see new amazing things in my future. I can't wait to try it out and hopefully help testing.

Ditto

Greetings to the forum from Spain.

Thanks to the developers for thinking Cinema 4D users and for their hard work with Corona renderer.

I'm ready to pay 15-20 EUR for kickstarter for C4D corona renderer. Daily i'm using 3D Max and C4D as second software.
When kickstarter will start ? :) Today?
If we count 200-250 persons with 15-20 EUR payments (it's like a price for ONE 3D TREE MODEL)  - its more than 3000 EUR. It should be enough to invite some software developer.
Maybe target 10000 EUR for a half year should be enough to finish porting CORONA to C4D?
Thank You in advance for Your hardworking for community.

3000 EUR would barely suffice to keep one skilled and competent developer employed for a month. And it would take at least a year to get good and finished integration within 3D package. So at very least 36 000 EUR. And that's just a price of development, not actual Corona licence once it becomes commercial. So while 15-20 EUR donation could get you maybe a little discount, you would still have to buy final Corona afterwards.

Ok. I understand. But why this thread started? if we need 36000 EU to port corona to C4D - is it possible or not? This thread is only for giving a hope? 3000 EU - it's many months of my work. I know that payment for software developer is much bigger than for 3D graphic designer, but here is a lot of people which want to pay for development of this port. Not only me with 20 EU :)

I understand. This thread was originally started because someone got assigned to C4D development, although i am not quite sure if it's still going on. I am not saying you have a bad idea...  just that it takes a bit more then most of people may think. It's really not that simple, and not only when it comes to finances.

I was thinking closer to 100-125 euro each towards the plugin development otherwise it would need a whole bunch of people straight off. I dont have a problem with the system octane has where you buy a main license and a license for the plugin. I think Thea also does that but I could be wrong.

why you guys are talking about values? We gave already info that we are able to pay if the problema was Money the author of corona for sure will give a  word about it now talkign about how much a coder needs, bla bla bla there is no point, only person who can talk about values is the author. Maybe should be better to ask about current status of the development or if it is in standby or not, or if we will see it in c4d one day... just relax and wait for sure the author will give some info when he have some!

"why you guys are talking about values?"

I suppose the latest info was Keymaster saying he was getting close to considering kickstarter for Corona and that the c4d plugin is a student project which was started a year ago. The Maya plugin seems to be developing and the API is there so if we can offer a coder some cash to spend some time developing a C4D plugin then why not? But if folk only want to put in a few euro each then that could take a long time to get a decent pot.

Well if it is not about money then what else we can say or do to motivate this programmer!!!
There is people dying on the streets now wondering when Corona for Cinema 4D will be available, North and South Korea are about to start a war to find who get the first copy.  Brazil will not participate of the next Soccer world coup unless Corona for Cinema is release... that work for you?? :) :)

Very nice update, very much refined than the first one congratulations.
I am pretty sure there is plenty people ready for beta test this, we are just missing developers!! I can't believe it.

I am still holding hope, I don't want to spend in V-Ray to later find out that Corona is out I rather spend my money in this engine.

Looking at the screen shot, and I know it may be a early stage question but, Cinema 4D has a rather not efficient Sky system, I see that the Corona Test look really good, are you guys implementing the Corona Shader using Cinemas Sky? or you have a specific Sky system ?
Thanks

Please forgive my naivety on this but I would be interested in finding out more about how renderers (like Corona) are ported to the likes of C4D. There is obviously a lot of work to do as we know from other renderers and the corona development time, but to us non programmers out there it can be frustrating having to wait as we can't always see exactly what the issues and hurdles are.

The way I imagine it is simply using C4D as a host that outputs geometry with material settings and mapping info out to corona which then does the magic and sends back the visual feedback image to C4D. Are the things like HDCache setting not just an integer spinner that wires directly into the integer slot in the corona engine? same with the camera and light info, can we not just export the location and dimensions of a c4d area light out along with the settings corona is asking for?

I appreciate there might be the odd quirk that Maxon might not have encoroprated in the process and vray has struggled to get fixes in the past from maxon but it all seems to be a lot harder and take a lot longer than I have accounted for. So I was wondering what the unseen hurdles are as that might shed some light?

Thanks

There are 2 major problems:

1) writing UI code is always tedious, generates a LOT of code, and is very hard to test and verify

2) Any nontrivial APIs are major source of pain in the ass, because they tend to be non-intuitive, poorly documented, or just don't fit the task. I have yet to see an API except for operating systems and programming language standard libraries that is well-documented. Any programmer porting Corona to any platform will be squeezed between two such APIs: Corona and the 3D app.

I see thanks. So there must be a lot of trial and error. No doubt that lack of documentation contributes to bugs too.

You would think the likes of Maxon would be best placed to do the plugin themselves inhouse and offer it as an extra bolt on. Its not like they would lose out on AR sales as that is built into the app anyway much to my annoyance as I've not touched it for years!

EDIT: Actually scratch that, between them and graphisoft they couldn't have made a bigger hash of the archicad importer if the tried! 3rd party one is much better

Is a chance (in future, after plugin release) to run Corona with Cinema 4D R10? I know that is old software...(2007) but maybe...
Here is my scene created with C4D R10 to test noise shaders and other things. You can use it if You want, CORONA team:

and download:
http://trzyde.blogspot.com/p/freebies_5.html - check download number 009.
I hope you will find it to useful to check materials after conversion between C4D and corona.

Yeah unfortunately they have been very quiet about it! I heard from the dev team that a public installer was about to be released, but that was over a month now and nothing was released. Let's just think that it's closer and closer to keep our spirits high :)

there were some bugs in the build. They were fixed and new release candidate was shipped yesterday. If everything goes well, this is the version that will get publicly released next week.

So thrilled about Corona for C4D! Will it support the released R16 also right from the start of the public alpha?

How do the features compare to Corona for 3dsmax at the moment? Does it lack many?

The software needs to be in the beta stage :)
I tried to be an alpha tester but they closed the submissions. Since that the public alpha release is eminent, you'll have plenty of testing to do...

found what appears to be a bug unless I missed something in the documentation about scale. The DOF is off by a factor of 10. With the default units of scale in C4D, I need to divide the focal distance by 10 to make it accurately reflect where I had the original focus.

Development Idea

Would be nice to see Carona implement a material override toggle switch/keyboard shortcut for quick lighting check in the viewport. And maybe in the future they could make it even more handy by allowing users to drag and drop the materials that they want to override onto the toggle switch to override that specific material. Practical or not?

Hi, great Job for Corona for C4D.

I used 3ds max for a while and I have to change for C4D... life is like that ;)
I install the alpha version... great... as well as for 3ds max...
I miss only some features... is there a list what corona c4d does or not?
For examples: Pass rendering / Shadow Catcher

found it... :'(
https://corona-renderer.com/wiki/c4d
need passes :'(
