[Max] General Discussion / Corona and Gaussian splats?
« on: 2025-03-16, 03:29:10 »
Hi,

Having seen this post: https://www.chaos.com/blog/gaussian-splatting-3d-rendering I was wondering if there's any plan for Corona to handle Gaussian splats in the near future?

Hi,

I'm a bit confused about the order in which to connect the CoronaRandomizer and Triplanar maps.

I've read somewhere that the CoronaRandomizer map must come first, then it has to be plugged into the Triplanar map, but I recently had the case where it didn't work and I had to plug the bitmap first into the Triplanar map, then into the CoronaRandomizer map.

Can you clarify this point?

Thanks

[Max] I need help! / Long rendering time
« on: 2025-02-26, 12:03:26 »
Hi,

I'm rendering an interior. Nothing fancy, just a basic dining room with a small kitchen and a living-room.
The scene is lit by a Corona Sun, Corona Sky as environment, very basic.

Here are two screenshots: the plan, so you have an idea of what the space looks like, and the camera view so you see what the actual render will look like. These are clay viewports but all materials are done. No displacement. Few forest packs here and there, for mulch and grass mainly, few Railclone objects, for the fence mainly. Some Coronaproxies for neighborhood buildings and some small trees. Nothing extraordinary really.

When I render in 4000 pixels wide, Corona says it will last for 15 hours. I use a Threadripper 3990X: 15 hours seems a lot for this 128 cores cpu.

I tried playing with the "GI vs. AA balance" setting, but I didn't notice any particular change in the rendering time.

There are only 5 windows, so I guess what Corona is struggling with is the lack of light coming in, especially in the kitchen area.
To help brighten this area a bit, I added a simple Corona Rectangle Light in front of the kitchen island.

My question is: what can be optimised in order to reduce the rendering time?

Thanks a lot for your help,

Hi,

I want to render using the exr format. Unfortunately only the beauty is saved, not the render elements although I ticked the "Automatically Add/Remove Render Elements from Render Dialog" option.

Thanks for your help,

[Max] General Discussion / Licence renewal
« on: 2024-11-20, 04:22:38 »
Hi,

My Corona licence is due to renewal in 8 days.
I want to make changes as I don't have any need for Phoenix and Chaos Player, so I want to downgrade to Corona Solo instead of Corona Premium.

I don't see any link to do that. And I didn't see any email address to write to, hence I'm posting my quesion here.
Plus I read the following message on "My products" page:

"Need to make changes? You can do so 30 days before renewal for yearly plans, and 14 days for monthly ones."

I don't need all the features of Corona Premium, but are you telling me I have to pay for it for another addtional year?

Thanks for your support and clarification,

General CG Discussion / Selling a model
« on: 2024-07-09, 03:40:43 »
Hi,

I hope this is the correct section to post on, and I hope it's not an issue posting questions that are not purely related to Corona. Highly knowledgeable people share their thoughts on this forum so I thought I'd ask my questions here.

For commercial purpose I've been creating a detailed 3d model of a urban area, that I used to render some images, and now my client comes back to me asking me if I'm willing to send them the 3d model. They say they will "use the model to send it to a scenographer who is mandated to create a model of the whole town".

I'm not sure how to approach this: for sure, I can send them the model and charge them for the time spent creating it, but I'm also wondering about copyright. Is there a way for me to be recognized as the person who created this model? Is there a specific form that my client needs to fill out to acknowledge that I am the author of the 3D model? Can I charge for these rights? If so, how much?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

[Max] Feature Requests / Gamma operator
« on: 2024-05-12, 05:04:56 »
Hi,

I know this is already on your development roadmap, but I just wanted to reiterate it here, as it seems to be a highly anticipated feature by many users.

Thanks in advance for bringing back the Gamma operator!

Hi,

I'm using a PhoenixFDOceanTex as a displacement map in a CoronaPhysicalMtl: it's working fine on a horizontal plane, but I want to apply the displacement effect on a vertical object and it doesn't work.

I tried all the options available in the Phoenix texture Coordinates menu but it seems to have no effect.

Can you help?

[Max] General Discussion / Reflection color in PhysicalMtl?
« on: 2024-02-19, 00:53:13 »
Hi,

Since Corona switched from LegacyMtl to PhysicalMtl, I've learned to use PhysicalMtl and I'm generally happy with it, especially because it adds features that used to require the use of LayeredMtl for example. However, what I regret is the impossibility, as far as I know, to modify the color of a material's reflection because this option has simply disappeared.

Sometimes I want to assign a particular color to the reflection slot, which is possible with LegacyMtl but not with PhysicalMtl anymore. I know it's not a PBR approach, but from an artistic point of view, it's sometimes desirable.

Is there any way to alter the reflection color of a PhysicaMtl without altering the diffuse color as well?

Thanks,

[Max] General Discussion / Camera Film width setting
« on: 2024-02-16, 01:52:38 »
Hi,

In the CoronaCamera settings, there's one called 'Film width [mm]'. By default, it is set to 36mm, which makes sense since it's the standard width value of old film rolls in analog photography. However, what significance does this have in a digital camera like the Corona camera?

More generally, what's the purpose of this setting, which seems to have a similar influence to the focal length?

Why keep this setting in the CoronaCamera UI if it's redundant?

And if it has a purpose and you use it, in what situations do you use it?

Many thanks,

General CG Discussion / Upscaling animation frames with AI?
« on: 2023-12-18, 12:14:27 »
Hi,

I have to produce a 1080p animation with 3ds Max/Corona.

Has anyone tried to render frames in a lower resolution and then upscale them using an AI software like Topaz Gigapixel for instance?

Thanks for your insight guys,

[Max] Resolved Bugs / CPU powers drops
« on: 2023-09-02, 08:35:27 »
Hi,

I have an issue on a very simple scene made of a few walls and a ceiling, timber floor and a coffee table.
It is lit by a Corona Sky environment map. Every objects are assigned a simple plain grey CoronaPhysicalMtl.

When I hit render (production renderer), everything works as expected: the cpu runs at 100%.

But as soon as I apply the 'White Paint' material to an object, the cpu usage drops to around 40%.

If I get of this material and I apply back the grey neutral material, the cpu usage hits 100% again.

The same problem arises if I use the IR.

I can send you the scene if needed (3ds Max 2023.3.3, Corona 10 hotfix 1)

Thanks for the help.

[Max] I need help! / Motion Blur in animations
« on: 2023-08-27, 08:42:37 »
Hi,

I'm rendering a short, simple animation: a camera slowly moving over a kitchen benchtop, showing some pieces of food and the cooktop.
The issue is, eventhough the movement of the camera is pretty slow, how to make sure the overall movement in the resulting video will be smooth, and not jerky? In other words how to implement a soft, nice motion blur?

Of course I could enable motion blur in the camera settings, but I don't want to do that in order to keep rendering times as short as possible.
I guess there must be a way to do that in post-production? I use After Effects.

It's worth mentioning there's not any moving objects in my scene, nor moving lights. The only moving thing is the camera.

What's your usual workflow?

Thanks for your advice.
