Had same issue (hang while Preparing Data) with the latest (a5), solved by removing old render settings and making new one.

How do you set the focus distance then?

I can't, render shows DoF blur, but static at some low value (or 0).

Just a swift spin thru...

DoF works, but Focus Distance doesn't work; Infinite plane/ Floor is not supported (as is procedural C4D geo); IPR works, but crashes a lot (still); VFB disregards/brakes LWF (darken); Corona Sun rotation is shifted by 180° (still)...

It is called film emulation & VSCO is just one of the preset makers/providers.

Basically it is color & tonal correction w/ added grain, to get the familiar look of analog film photography.

Learn about the Modular Design & Workflow to your needs/intentions. If not experienced with it yet, turn to your advantage by gathering more knowledge and skillz. Even if you later decide to animate or move into game engine (RT) you'll be on the track and won't have to do extra deconstructing & reconstructing.
Same as with any building project in architecture or events, films, fairs, sets... (history fact: bricks are the first/primal modules invented). The need to lower energy and effort invested, to have greater-better efficiency, the building and the process (knowledge, skill, tools...) need to be as simple as possible - modular. Practiced since ancient times.

From experience had noticed that simple users don't see the reason to why or the benefits (cuz it takes longer to render), then when need occurs, they just call it a bug.

^thru that - lovely optimizations :D also making LOD asset needed for a larger projects master planning, urban development, environment...

For surrounding environment, backgrounds... i usually just make billboards, blocks, mattes, street view alike ;)

Doing any baking also (hi>lo)?
