[Max] Daily Builds / Re: Corona Slicer Material playground!

Is there any future scope to have the slicer capping functionality added to the camera clipping settings in the corona camera? A Checkbox for capping would be useful for rendering orthographic elevations with the ortho projection camera.

Here is a working mock-up: open scene, select camera, run IR, activate camera clipping and cruise around. I misused the "show in viewport" checkbox to toggle slicer material on/off.

Good Luck

Oh Interesting! So it just works already just accidentally??

Thanks Tom. Good to know that it is happening and isn't going to be a vray specific feature

<Bump>

Havent seen this on the roadmap yet but given the recent branding changes and a more obvious merging etc im still wondering if we might see this integrated natively at some point in the near future?

But viewing distance can require high res if needed, it all depends.

Just out of interest what situation might you need high res with a large viewing distance?

This roll to roll printer can print up to 2160 dpi maximum resolution of 3.2m edge to edge size with speeds from 36 sqm/hr up to 92 sqm/hr.

I did have much larger billboards in mind but yeah fair enough i hadnt considered things like high res art prints

I don't think your client really understands the requirements, in my opinion

Exactly this. I cant imagine theres a printer out there that is printing 300dpi images that are multiple meters across.
Youre absolutely correct that most clients dont understand that a 70-150dpi image seen from 20 ft away is going to look more than fine when its billboard sized.

It isnt clear what youre asking for here.
Do you mean you want to be able to add light select render elements during an interactive render?

Fair enough. If youre in need of something at the moment, im pretty sure the batch image editor has an example script to change exposure and save a version so if you wanted to tinker with it, it is currently possible to do what you want.

You can access the image editor with the command line interface and theres a reference for what you can do somewhere in the help files.
So using that, you could write a short script to make exposure adjustments to a saved CXR and automatically save out several exposure stops for you.

I made a couple in a batch file and added it to the right click context menu for CXR files so whenever i right click on a CXR i have the option to generate a TIF or JPG file. With a few small tweaks im sure you could do what you need.

Im not sure if its possible but could decals could be used as masks in other materials?
Potentially by having a material node that can select a decal in the scene and use its projection to mask something else?

Having decals usable for individual maps is something we want to consider in v9 or v10

Thats great to know thanks. Decals are saving me so much time so thank you!

Surely corona is just constantly comparing its pass/noise level number to whatever that spinner value is to determine when to stop.

It just doesn't. It constantly compares to internal values which were set at render start according to the spinner values (and other settings in the render setup UI) as far as I know. I can understand that most of those settings have to be static and cannot be changed after being initialized. But stop conditions could be handled dynamically imho. If you take for example noise level - it's dynamically calculated anyway and leads to a render stop when reached. So why should the value set in the UI not been compared/refreshed after every pass?  And even when thinking about DR I see no reason because DR slaves just silently render passes until they get message from master to stop.

Yeah to be fair now i think about it more, it wouldnt be referring back to the UI constantly it would be getting that value at render start and just storing it internally as you say.

Stop conditions are pulled at start of rendering together will other render settings and are not evaluated later any more to avoid inconsistencies, that's the reason. For unattended network jobs I use a periodically invoked script to test for stop conditions "externally" and use the corona interface to gracefully finish the job if conditions are reached (also see https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php?topic=30970.msg176411#msg176411).

Good Luck

I understand they are evaluated when the render begins. But why does that have to be the case? Surely corona is just constantly comparing its pass/noise level number to whatever that spinner value is to determine when to stop.

If inconsistency is the argument then being able to adjust the tonemapping controls mid render is just as dangerous imo. Ideally id like to see a way to do it without having to stop and resume the render as you pointed out in that linked thread.

Sometimes ive found a situation where ive started a render and want to adjust the noise limit. Usually when a scene cleans up faster than expected but dont want to stop the render.
Is there any reason why we couldnt adjust the limits on the fly during the rendering process in the VFB?
