Hi everyone, I have built Stracciatella Ice Cream and am almost satisfied with the result.
The only thing I really struggle with is to get that half molten look where you can see the chocolate chips through the ice cream.
in the first iteration I did build thousands of chocolate chips (with poly fx and randomizing) sticking into and out of the ice cream. That looked great but was very heavy on my mac.
But as I then ended up needing 6 Ice cream sticks in one picture (they are really tiny ice creams) this wasn't feasible anymore. and I searched for a different solution.
I then used different ice cream colors with different water levels on the displacement layer over a chocolate colored base, did multiple renderings and merged three renders into one picture in Photoshop.
I did try everything from subsurface Scattering, Opacity, Volumetrics etc. but I did never get a really satisfying result. (The Corona built Ice cream also didn't work as wished).
So has anyone every had such a task and /or a better idea to how to realize real looking Stracciatella?

Can you send a max file with your model and your test renders? It's hard to help without seeing what you've already achieved!

I cannot attach the file or an actual picture as it is not released yet. I will try to post some screenshots of isolated parts though.

Here are two screenshots.
one of the two different materials I am using and one of a composing I have done in Photoshop.
In the composing you can see the effect I would like to achieve with just one material. that semi-transparency where you can see through the chocolate.
But with only two materials it really lacks of depth and I don't want to mask every single "chocolate chip" individually in photoshop to get that depth.

Thank you, this looks brilliant and very appetizing. But that's more of an Italian handmade Stracciatella in a Gelateria.
But I the ice cream I have received by mail are very industrial and the chocolate chips are embedded in the chocolate. ( such a kind: https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTilpKks4_LyPITjWGqlQuBEa0mXLAC5EvofA&usqp=CAU )
the photoshop composing I posted before is close to the real version I have in my fridge (even though the chocolate pieces sticking out are still missing there).
In the meantime I was playing around with Volumetrics (in search of the semitransparent effect) but I don't get a nice result.

Agreed, pretty much perfect, George! Love it.
As an advertiser, I would choose this anytime over the industrialized version, after all it's what advertising is for ;)

Thanks for the interest guys, nothing really complex on those tests I made for the achwassolls. For the ice cream, I've used a simple creamy-white color base with Roughness 0.6 and IOR 1.35 (Milk). Instead of Volumetric scattering, I chose to go with Subsurface Scattering, amount 1.0 Rad=0.5cm and a pinkish-yellow color. Note that base color might benefit from CoronaAO with an outside +inside operation to add variation in crevices and around the chocolate chips. A simple displacement map for the surface irregularities, any stucco like would work for ice-cream.
For chocolate chips, you can scatter a voronoi fractured geometry with some noise and smoothing or simply any set of stones that look like cracked solids (quixel bridge). What makes the difference for both the chips and the cream is that Sheen is great at emulating the frosting effect around the objects, so feel free to play around with values. I will try and export it to a seamless mat. so there is not going to be a need to scatter, rather rely completely on disp. alone. Also still looking into achwassolls request.
