Hallo

I always have the problem that even with simple geometry e.g. a rectangular gravel surface the displacement makes polygon lines in the rendering.
  See the gravel area in the screenshot.  The material consists of a frontal gravel image in the diffuse layer and the same image in the displacement layer.
I use UVW-mapping or Cubic-mapping.

Hello,

did you try the UVW Randomizer? It's a corona shader and if you select "Randomize each tile", you can get rid of some repeating patterns. Give it a shot and let me know how that goes!
