Hey Folks. Thought I'd post a few images from my latest Corona project, a re-creation of Marcel Breuer's 1959 Hooper House II. Detailed info here on my blog http://bertrand-benoit.com/blog/hooper/.

You can see the entire series here: https://www.behance.net/BBB3viz, and the full-res images here:  https://www.flickr.com/photos/bbb3viz/albums/72157687741648784

Just posted this and I thought I'd share it here too. Done with 3ds Max 2016. You can check wires, more shots, a viewport walkthrough and some comparisons with other renderers on my blog.

This is an almost 90% RailClone scene. Done with Corona 1.5. Had a lot of fun with LightMix and Bloom&Glare.

This scene is in the warehouse (both the RailClone one and an all-poly version). All details and a little making-of on my blog.

Playing catch-up here. These are images from a scene I completed quite a while back but never got round to posting. My attempt at recreating one of these high-end Poliform/Varenna kitchen.

The modeling was done in 3ds Max and the rendering in, of course, Corona.

Gallery / From the machine (very mild nudity)
« on: 2016-04-11, 10:53:28 »

Originally, I was going to model several different locations from Alex Garland's haunting*movie "Ex-Machina" and render an animation (in the vein of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pm0HjzPdj8E"[/youtube]]Dannie's Dream).

As it happened, I got distracted, lost interest, and the one set I modeled--the underground residential quarters in Nathan's house--was so tough to render because of the many light sources and translucent glass that I gave up on the video.

What remains is this series of stills--test renders, really. I modeled the architecture and furniture based on stills from the film. The 3D characters come from a variety of commercial vendors. I published those shots on Instagram a while back, but given that I'm not going to work on them anymore, and given that Ex-Machina got an Oscar, I thought now was the right time to show them here.

I used 3ds Max to model. Hope you like them as much as I liked the film.

Gallery / 70m²
« on: 2015-11-04, 10:24:50 »

After some heavy-duty exterior work with the Nakagin Capsule Tower, it's back to basics with this subdued Scandinavian-looking interior.

This scene featuring a small apartment (about 70 square meters, as you may have guessed) was modeled in 3ds Max, as always. Corona is perfect for this kind of work and takes care of the difficult illumination without complaints. Minimal post-work was done in RandomControl's ArionFX, which is turning into my post-production tool of choice for color-correction, temperature tweaking, and lens effects.

The idea here is maximum realism conveyed through detailed modeling of all visible parts, the use of some 3D-scanned models (the stools, the wood bowl, the pumpkins, the pastry...), complex shaders, and the illumination (the night shots actually show some light contribution from lamp posts on the street outside captured in the HDR maps).

The full scene--including its entire content and separate day and night setups--for 3ds Max 2016 and Corona 1.2.1. is available to download. All the full-res renders (raw .exr renders and post-processed .jpgs) can also be downloaded for free. More info about this and additional views on my blog: www.bbb3viz.com.

As always, very keen to hear your comments.

Gallery / Corona Kitchen
« on: 2015-02-15, 19:09:33 »

I've been wanting to return to Corona for a while but couldn't find the time. Then I saw some marketing shots by Cesar for its Kalea line of kitchens that I thought fitted the renderer perfectly due to the somewhat complicated "chiaroscuro" lighting scenario. These images have been finished for quite some time but I'm only getting round to posting them now. There was relatively little post work done to them other than running them through ArionFX for some nice glows, levels adjustments and film emulsion effects. Beyond that, not much to say about this relatively simple scene, which uses a mix of new and re-shaded V-Ray assets. Render times oscillated between 2 and 4 hours, with the shots with heavy DOF taking quite a bit longer to resolve fully. Hope you like these.

Hi Folks,
Just a small heads-up that I've written an extensive, layman-language guide to how to achieve a photographic final look in renders. It is renderer-agnostic and includes examples that use different renderers, including Corona.
See what you think and let me have your comments.
Best, Bertrand

Gallery / Chicago Loft
« on: 2014-07-12, 11:32:03 »
I've been fooling around with my Chicago Loft model, re-engineered for Corona (manual material conversion is fast enough), plus a few recent models.
Very fast renders in general. Two hours maximum per 2K image, but most were very usable after 45 minutes (the last image rendered for about 30 mins and is grainier than the rest).
There's a fair bit of post-work here: curves, color cast, CA, glow...

[Max] Resolved Bugs / Exposure (EV) not working
« on: 2014-07-01, 08:43:25 »
In A7, in the ColorMap section of the tools, Exposure (EV) seems to have no affect at all on the image, whereas Highlight Compress, Contrast and WB all work as expected.

[Max] Resolved Bugs / No bump if composite map
« on: 2014-07-01, 08:35:13 »
I think I may have found a bug in version 7.

I'm making a floor by plugging two offset version of the same texture in a composite map with a noise map as blending map.

It shows fine in the diffuse, but in the bump slot, only one of the maps seems to be having an effect. The other one shows flat. Have a look at the images:
