Hardware / Blurry max UI with new Dell 27" 4k monitor...
« on: 2020-08-26, 14:11:38 »
Hey all, I recently got a Dell U2720Q 4k monitor that I'm intending to use as my main monitor and I'll use my 2 U2415H either side of it...
however, with 175% scaling - which is what makes the text/icons the "right" size, they whole UI is blurry...

I've played around with the settings in the "Change High DPI settings" in the 3dsmax.exe context menu but I just can't seem to get it to work...

can anyone here help?

I'm running windows 10 and max 21.

Thanks in advance.

Hey all,

Just wondering if there are any affinity users out there who have figured out how to use the flood selection tool (or other tool) to make blanket colour selections with the wirecolour/mask/maskID render elements?

Thanks.

[Max] I need help! / Re: Best revit model workflow
« on: 2020-08-10, 01:31:23 »
do you find that when importing the fbx the model is pretty much unworkable...? that's been my "general" experience...
I was hoping there was a way to import it that would allow me to use the model without having to extensively re-model it...

[Max] I need help! / Best revit model workflow

Hey all,

Just wanting some advice on the best way to work with revit (fbx) models...?
If I import them via file import-import, the geometry comes in particularly shite... I've just found that you can link an fbx file via file - references - manage links, the geometry comes in much cleaner...

I'm just wondering is there a "best" method for working with models exported from Revit...? Is fbx the best file format?

Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks.

Good info thanks TomG! ;)

ah cool - does corona scatter work in 3 dimensions? or just on a plane?

39
sorry mate, i'm not following you? can you ellaborate more?

much appreciated. ;)

Thansk for the responses... unfortunately the box geometry fades in opacity as smoke rises through the pellets in an animation...

41
I need to create the geometry for a large box filled with small carbon pellets.
I've tried a few pflow tutorials but it seems that the number of pellets required to fill the box is too large...

does anyone have any other suggestions?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hardware / Re: Benchmark slowed down 3 secs over time... why
« on: 2020-04-29, 10:28:27 »
It shouldn't.

Although:
- There is some variations between runs, esp. since they are so short and thus depend how the CPU will react with boosting, current voltage/temperature (if your room is hotter that day that alone will reduce boost clocks),etc.. For Corona this can easily be 2-3 seconds for 20 second run, and up to 4-5 second per minute.
- In reviews, benchmarks are run at fresh OS installation, before anything else. It's natural that there will be chance of interference from competing processes, perhaps the Defender decided to scan some files, or Photos app decided on cataloguing, on Windows started compressing files, etc.. that can be million things alone.

- Occasionally software mitigations (like Spectre for Intel CPUs, etc..) are fixed through patches that slow performance down to some degree to fix the loopholes. This is rather unfortunate.. ( I personally have these fixes disabled for my i9 for example, as they're really obscure issues)

If the discrepancy is bigger, some underlying issue can be suspected (quite often memory related).

cool thanks mate 👍 I wont stress too much about it...

https://www.techpowerup.com/memtest64/

Some people run it days ;- ) Also if Aida64 and Prime95 don't crash your PC (Prime has memory focused run), that's also good.

That's after enabling XMP profile and lowering the speed from 3200 to 2933 (This is the highest stable speed for 128 GB on X399, esp. low tier memory like Vengeance 3200/16)

Thanks mate, I'll give it a crack ;)

Hardware / Benchmark slowed down 3 secs over time... why

Hey all,

Just wondering what would/might cause my benchmark results to slow down over time? I know this is broad but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I am on verge of barely tolerating the drivel from Burnin.
Removed because it's wrong advice, and neither do I find it funny.

Short answer: It should work.

Long answer: It should, but might not in specific cases. You have to buy identical codename, not just type, to make sure it's identical revision. So if it's called Corsair Vengeance RGB 3000 CL15 but the full code is 12456ABCD001, you have to buy that same code to be guaranteed to have identical kit. Buy it based on that full product code, nothing else.
Because otherwise, what happens between revisions, is that different manufacturer will provide the dies (which only come from Samsung, Micron, or Hynix), and they don't have to play along at their designated rating (XMP profile). It will still work, but if it's 3000 CL15 for example, it may not be stable at such.

Memory compatibility didn't use to be a problem at all, it did become though with AMD Zen architecture which uses memory to much higher degree and has far more sensitive memory controller (this was worst for X399, it's much better for 3rd gen TRX40 right now).

Also, seeing what kit you have, count with possibility that 128 GB for 2950X might not work at 3200 CL16. In that case, enable the XMP profile, and override the speed to 2933. Then you're good to go.

Okay thanks mate, I bought the same product code RAM being CMK64GX4M4B3200C16. I've installed it and its showing now as 128...
how would I test it to make sure its good/stable etc...?
