[Max] Daily Builds / Re: Daily Builds
« on: 2015-03-25, 10:25:57 »
I can absolutely understand why checkboxes make sense. If you need to render variations a simple checkbox is better then having to remove the material and stash it somewhere in the material editor so it's not lost.

It would be fantastic if, when a bitmap in screen mapping mode is used as the directly visible background, rendering in crop mode wouldn't reproject the map but instead maintain its original position and scaling in the final frame.
Right now, it'll not respect the original position and you end up with a differently screen mapped background.

I had this with no IR running but the material editor was open so this might be another place to look.

Happens to me every now and then.. when i modify texture in ps.. and in max scene crashes..

Same here, sometimes it'll crash, sometimes max doesn't care. Didn't crash in versions prior to 1.0, however...

This is interesting. Could you upload me a (simplfied) version of the scene where it happens?

I'll try, however this has happened a couple of times only until now so not sure how to reproduce.

Is this something that could be locked/fixed by introducing a seed spinner? If yes, please do so, it would be an excellent addition to the map anyways ;)

Cocona MultiMap in instance mode produces different results when re-rendering. I am currently rendering a project via backburner on different machines and each version differs from the previous although the map settings haven't changed. It doesn't seem to happen every time but it happens.

Hardware / Re: Dual E5 or i7
« on: 2015-03-19, 19:25:31 »
Than you found wrong. I run quite few dual-xeons...and yes, they scale almost linearly. Until you reach the too many cores of top models, and then certain applications including Corona have problems utilizing all the cores, but this is software issue and not HW.

Comparing my old dual Xeon PC vs the new one where speed ration on the paper is almost 1:2, Corona's speed up was not as good, it's somewhere around 1:1,7 - not really linear. Other renderers and programs where indeed linear when compared on these machines. What's odd is that the ratio was 1:2,5 with old daily builds and decreased continuously. Mind you, I have not checked in the last months so the numbers I state here may be absolutely wrong for the final 1.0 release. I guess you were more thorough then so stick to Juraj's research, OP.

Have a look in the benchmark thread here and compare Corona's results with official benchmarks (for example whether a speed ratio between two certain CPUs is comparable to the ratio from the same CPUs from a dedicated benchmark site). I found that fore some reason dual Xeon setups do not scale linearly and that a simple GHZ vs time rule is not reliable. A single high end i7 might be a better investment in the end when compared to a super expensive dual Xeon rig.

Beautiful interiors, excellent work!

A really nasty bug. Working around this with thin glass is not viable in some cases so a fix would be highly appreciated!

So it's using embree now as well? :)

That's telepathy at work here. I was thinking about posting that request today. Best would be to add this as an option in 'instance' mode so you can either instance or element or both mixed.

[Max] Resolved Bugs / Re: Shell modifier
« on: 2015-03-02, 14:36:44 »
I assume that's the same thing with shell that I've reported at some point. The funny thing is it was related to the teapot primitive only.

Repro:
- start IR
- create teapot
- add a shell mod -> normals are garbled

Do the same with a plane, a torus etc, it will render correctly.

Is this what you see OP?

I tested again - two PCs hang after rendering and can't save the images, regardless if it's the beauty pass or the element.
Plenty of RAM free on both machines.

I can save a 10000 px width without any problems but 18000 px will hang, both when saving from Corona VFB or copying to max VFB first and saving from there.
Checked Path length and file name, all save fine when it's smaller, only the final resolution will freeze max.

Unfortunately I have no time to dig deeper right now, so can't really check with other setups.

I am rendering images at 18000 x 4500 px, beauty pass and SourceColor element.
I have tried to render and save the element only on my local machine - saving didn't work, max would freeze, waiting didn't help.
I then tried to render on a slave through backburner, rendering went fine, but again, max hangs after that when trying to save.

Are there known problems with saving images at these dimensions? I don't know if it has to do with the element, will have to test tomorrow. But having this happening on two machines suggests that it is a bug. I have definitely no network or drive space related problems.

Note: this is NOT v1.0, it's the last daily build (18-Feb-2015), with max 2014.
