If surface is coated with opaque layer of paint or varnish, the material should be treated as non-metallic. It doesn't matter what's underneath it, as far as we aware there could be anything, or even nothing at all, generally it doesn't impact top surface properties.

WOOW the change is indeed huge, do you have the render times for those ?

About 3 minutes for each, it was set to pass limit as stopping condition. I didn't look at noise percentage, but MSI 0 was obviously much noisier before denoiser. One would need to make more in-depth tests before drawing any conclusions, but as Aram said, with the new fireflies filter you can now play with MSI. Just a reminder - you want to increase it to make its effect less destructive. Setting it to 0 is a special case, i.e. MSI is effectively turned off, which is not recommended.

Not necessarily, you can use aperture for DOF and shutter speed for motion blur and at the same time still use simple exposure to control exposure. Corona is very flexible about that and doesn't force you into single workflow.

I never use photographic exposure. Simple exposure does exactly the same job and it's much easier to control with a single parameter. Your order of operators are all over the place. You're comparing simple exposure before LUT vs photographic exposure after LUT Of course you will get different result (incorrect in case of photographic). And as a rule of thumb, almost all operators should be above ACES OT. It doesn't make difference in your specific case, because ACE OT is turned off, but you always should try to maintain correct order, unless you really know what you're doing.

Speaking about bias, how about MSI? I was quite shocked another day to find how much light it could prevent to reach the areas that doesn't even seem that much occluded. Attached are comparison of default MSI 20 vs MSI 0 (off). Of course i would not recommend to turn MSI off in your scenes, because you'll surely get a ton of fireflies and much longer render times, but it might be useful to try adjust it in some darker interiors and see if you like what you see. Does anyone remember the old MSI 200 rule? :]

By the way, new firefly filter does pretty amazing job at removing excessive fireflies caused by turned off MSI (see the last attached example).

Not all materials are created equally, some are simple and will work fine in any scenario, others are more complex and might require some tweaking to work best in specific scenes. Wow, just wow. Stunning work. I could stare at it for hours and still find so many minute details. Every single detail is perfected. This must took ages to finish. I also dig the subject very much, for some reasons dirty old laundromats have always fascinated me.

Oh, so it's Max's issue, not Corona's. I collapsed the stack in this file, so hopefully it will load fine for you this time, but the pattern itself will no longer be easily modifiable.

Not sure what you mean  by Corona native siding materials, but it's a common issue with displacement, it's just not very good at steep, sharp corners. You can improve situation by lowering displacement screen size as suggested, but it comes at the price of increased RAM consumption and longer parsing time and the issue is still there, just less visible. Better solution would be to modify your displacement maps by blurring them, so that displacement wouldn't have to work so hard and give much better result even at default settings. The downside of that method is that it can slightly change the look, so you must keep an eye to not over done it.
