Hi !
This is an amazing new option in Forest Pack Pro (beta version 4.3.2b) but it's, for the moment, only available for VRay.

It's an easy way, just in changing the boundary checking (in Areas Tab) from Point to Edge, to have grass, flowers etc. in very small areas, or simply in straight edges, like I did here.
I really really hope to have this option available for Corona as soon as possible.
Here is the topic I had with Itoo developers : http://forum.itoosoft.com/index.php?topic=2604.0

Impressive, does it use some internal clipping to cull the mesh ? Would be great to have that with Corona eventually.

Juraj, I think they use something similar to VRayClipper to cut geometry at rendering time.
But, this is possible only for VRay, because Corona and other engine haven't similar tool

VRayClipper = VRayClipper is a geometric primitive that can be used to clip away parts of the scene with a simple plane. It is a render-time effect and does not modify the actual scene geometry in any way.

BTW. It doesn't display that way natively in the viewport. I thought this was a bug but it's intentional due to performance issues. I asked them on the BETA page here: http://bit.ly/1wWheRr and their response was.
Quote
In v4.3.2 we have disabled Edge mode for viewport, because was causing lag. It must work fine at render.
However, it's possible to enable viewport preview again setting showEdgeMode=1 (default value is 0) in the forest config file:

C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsmax\<max version>\ENU\en-US\plugcfg\forestpack.ini

I hope they add the check box I asked for to toggle that option on and off in the UI.

Hi, See here. http://www.itoosoft.com/tutorials/tutorial_edge_mode.php?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_campaign=f1814d394c-Forest_Pack_4_312_17_2014&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_31862ed611-f1814d394c-119572681

He explains that it uses the lowest edge vertex in each individual element to determine the area. Which means no clipping of the mesh. :)

I will post on the forum how long corona will be to get this option if not already done so!

You're right, it's element based, so it still allows for small overhangs and nice detail on the edge. Very cool.

The density will need to be increased to get into all the nooks and crannies.

If that's the case with the element clipping, then I wonder how come Corona cannot take advantage of that.

I've replied here awaiting reply from Carlos.

This is great! So no more using 2 grass models and scale the edges?

This new edge can be achieved  with 1 grass model?

No and yes to your questions. I've tried with only one grass patch and it works perfectly (In VRay only for the moment).
But for Corona this method is really easy to use and produces the same result :

Jup.... same here. Gras on concrete, rooftiles in the air and so on. This clipping method would be great to have in Corona as well. I use forest for so many things and it happend to me not just once that i wisched for a "Clip on edge" Funktion. It would be great if there would be an Option to CAP THE OPEN EDGES of the cliped Geometrie (if it is not just a plane) to prevent from looking into it, if you use forest for distrebuting rooftiles (for example)

Maybe I'm not the most patient man in the world but did they give a timeframe for it to be implemented there side. If not then I'll go to the forum and ask.

We are working on a solution for Corona and Mental Ray, if all goes well you should see it in the forthcoming release of Forest Pack. I don't have a date for that at the moment I'm afraid, but Subscribers will be able to test the beta when it becomes available.

There is something I discovered by accident, I just used the script to convert my multiscatter grass, I use in vray scenes, there is vraydistance texture for "slicing" large patches of grass in opacity slot. Nice surprise was that corona supports this vray texture!

It's not so nice when you see how it's killing performance, though. Nevertheless it's always better to have an option than not.

Just tested Beta 5.0.1 + Max 2016 + Corona 1.3: Could not make edge mode work. Viewport preview (Ctrl+Click "Edge" radiobutton) shows a promising result. Itoo included Corona materials with Forest_Edge map in the opacity slot (a shell map to enable Corona and MR to use edge mode - happy coding DeadClown ;).

When I create a new Material using Forest_Edge in opacity slot, the material becomes completely invisible. The same happens when I untick Legacy mode in the provided  materials.

Edge mode works in MR now using Forest_Edge in fact. Was anyone successful with Corona yet? Or is still something missing at Coronas side?

Good Luck

You know, I never tried CoronaScatter yet.... I'm intrigued to see how it works for simple things like rugs and grass etc. We've just finished a very complex FP-based project that CS would not have worked for but if CS is being developed quickly it could be a very good general solution.

I found a way around this is to load one FPs own presets, copy its material to mat.editor and since the presets have materials set up with Forest_edge in opacity channel, just copy&paste your own materials' maps over the preset materials diffuse etc slots, apply the customized preset materialto your own models/forest and it works.. doesn't even take that long to set up in the end. It's still strange that applying the Forest_Edge to your own materials bugs out.

I think this only works since 5.0.2b. Edge mode of beta 5.0.1b didn´t worked at all in Corona.

Better to wait for a stable release :)

Very nice! 30-50% performance drop in some average scene is quite expensive though. But it seems that Itoo drastically reduced the lag after selecting a forest object - even nicer :)

Good Luck!
