[Max] Corona Goodies - User Contributions / SlateConnector
« on: 2014-09-24, 16:04:55 »
Hey people! How are you doing?!

Well, here's a little contribution for the Corona community (and a way to say "thanks" for Ondra taking me on the dailies ;) ). The script ISN'T finished by any means! Actually it has some flaws (which I'm trying to address as fast as my pre-school Maxscript skills allow me) but it's pretty useful as of now (version 0.2a) and can speed up the process of mass manipulating materials.

The idea was planted by Marcelo Souza (wooorld faaaaame :P) and made possible because much better scripters than me helped a lot along the way. Hope you guys find it useful on your daily work!

Cheers!

Hey DeadClown! Thanks for your tips on ScriptSpot! I will try to make my head around your code since I'm no Maxscript expert by no means (guess it shows on the script body :P ) and my main concern was making the script "work" at first.

Currently, the new version (0.3a, still unreleased) changed the way you select and change your materials selection. As of now, the script isn't "fool proof" and the properties and methods of the SME are pretty limited. One serious limitation is that you can't change the properties or assign nodes using SME commands (basically all you can get is the node's name and position on Slate) - you need to first select the material and it's done using an array that collects all classinstances of CoronaMtl type and compares the names of those materials to the names of the nodes selected on the SME. As you know, you CAN have materials with the SAME name on Slate (but not on Max's scene) and this alone is a possible "bug".

If AD exposed more methods and commands to the SME, maybe it would make the script even faster and more direct.

Cheers! And thanks a bunch!

Is this "new ebree" new instructions from Intel or changes you made to Corona itself? Testing here and so far so good!

Very nice image! The architecture and render are indeed very good!

I'd go a little far and say be generous in your PSU. A bad PSU has the potential to fry even the best components you carefully chose. Regarding brands, there's really no mystery - just avoid the obviously cheap chinese generic brands. Even manufacturers considered mainstream (like Gigabyte) make pretty decent hardware that will last long enough. Asus, Corsair, Samsung, SuperMicro, Intel, AMD, Hitachi, XFX, G.Skill, EVGA, all are pretty good brands which provide more than enough of a good support.

That's really easy to buy parts and build a PC, but if you don't have enough confidence/knowledge to do it, you can buy a Dell or Lenovo. You're just paying a little more for the same-ish performance.

Camera clipping! Also the ability to change some parameters of animated meshes (re-timing).

Will Corona ever support NPR? I'm aware this is not a MUST feature, but this kind of rendering is very useful with MoGraph. I usually rely on scanline since it's extremely fast, but not so much on scenes with lots of opacity maps.

Most of the secret of a good polycarbonate panel relies on the Bump (besides the obvious translucency, as everyone else pointed out). Your images look good enough already, just little tweaks (variable transparency to emulate dirt) and it's perfect.
