Title: Physical Material and Paint Flakes
Post by: BigAl3D on 2021-12-22, 20:00:30
I'm trying to get good with the new Physical material system and I'm liking it. One question I have is how would I go about adding a car paint flake effect using this system? Ironically, the material library's car paint examples are using legacy materials and layers. Can the flakes be done withing one Physical material?

Hi there,

The first example is the car paint from the material library manually converted to physical. And the second and third examples are from scratch just using the physical mat. I hope that helps.

Yes, that's very helpful. Thanks for your help.

You're most welcome! :)

I believe there are issues with the C4D asset browser in R25 with layered materials.  These Corona materials don't import.

How come?

All components import fine here (R25 + v8 daily from Dec 16 2021)

Note:
Corona Materials are imported via Corona's Material Library. Unless you made your own assets/presets from those. But those also work.

Do I see tiling on 3. image ;)

Indeed you do! ;) Next time, I'll use something seamless. :D

Have you tried Maxon Cell Voronoi? Potentially without triplanar needed?

I don't see why that wouldn't work ;)

I'm just trying to tweak the noise scale and contrast to get something working but I'm certainly no expert!

Here is what it looks like using Cell Voronoi. Hope that helps.

I really don't get how you create reflective Flake Car Paint with the new Physical Material... to me also the shown stuff does not look at all like Flakes?!

i would try adding a normal map for flakes, similar to this:

https://docs.chaos.com/display/OSLShaders/Flakes+normal+map

bump isnt enough in my experience to make ok glittering flakes:
there are many if you do a google search or you can pretty easy make them yourselves

v.8 is toxic :)

Wow!

Do you mind sharing a Picture of your Material Structure?

I would assume his material setup might be similar to this...

I am surprised how difficult it is to match your results. Seems pretty straight forward, but can't get it to look like that.

oh, I wouldn't bother matching the result,
specifically, it's a unique procedural mix based off of what's shown
just do it to your taste
