Thanks, that sounds pretty nice :)

Faster, and needs less memory - that's all I need to know :) I have no idea what the technical magic is behind it, never been concerned enough to ask, only interested in what it does for me and the results :)

Nice, but is it at the cost of worse quality or will the quality of displacement be the same?

I've been  trying to find an answer but i can't. Anyone know what it is?

The mesh was made with procedural noise displacement. No CoronaDisplacementMod though

I tried adding light and brighten it up, but it was still only noticeable when i enabled Caustics.
Even if it isn't the Caustics, i don't understand why it would appear, and why the fix was to subdivide the mesh even further.

Could it be that the caustics solver makes some sort of approximation of the mesh?

I should  add that the faceting didn't occur when Caustics were disabled

If you look closely you can see the faceting in the sphere.

However i found a solution. I needed to subdivide the mesh even more to get rid of it. I didn't think this was necessary with displacement in Corona, since i believe it makes a new mesh at rendertime, and the density of that mesh is controlled by the Screenpixel setting, right?

But going from screenpixel 3 -> 1 made no difference, turbosmooth did.

I should add that this was made with the latest daily build

Hey Guys.

I'm goofing around with the Caustics solver and i have gotten this problem.

I get a weird faceting effect on my displaced sphere. The geometry should be dense enough with Turbosmooth, and i even tried setting displacement settings to screensize 1.

It seems to be coming from my caustics.

Does anyone know a solution?

Bormax, sorry my 3ds max 2019 version doesn't allow me to save as a earlier version than 2016 for some reason.

Hey JadeFox.

Thanks man!
And sorry for the late reply.
I actually included a Readme file in the download, with a few instructions as well as some tips.
I'm by no means a 'seasoned pro', and dubcat knows way more than i do.
I'm just a 3D student that wanted to learn more about this stuff as well, and so i gave myself the task to make this scene.
If you're interested in learning some of the colortheory, i'd suggest you to read this PDF https://cinematiccolor.org/ from a 2012 siggraph course.
This goes through everything you need to know, and helped me tremendously.

Hope this helps :)

Had a discussion with some friends about pathtracing.

From what i understand the 'Brute force' GI method as seen in V-ray is not the same as Pathtracing.
I believe brute force is more biased and is doing more adaptations and casting fewer rays than Pathtracing.
Where BF might cast 10s of rays from a surface point in a random direction, PT will cast thousands.

I might be wrong though.

Is BF+BF a true pathtracer in V-ray?

Can someone help us? :)

Hey 3dsmax and corona users.
I want to share my free lookdevelopment environment with you guys.

With completely neutral colors and lighting. This scene ensures that you have the perfect environment to develop shaders, and that your shaders will have reliable results across various lighting conditions.

Hope you will like it.

Found a solution.
https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php?topic=13958.0

Turns out if you have a lot of overlapping refractive geometry it goes really slow.

Turning on caustics fixed the problem and made it 20x faster.
They said that this has been fixed, but my problem occured in Corona version 3
