Hi guys

thought i would do a quick video - is this normal?  sometimes its zippy, 90% of the time it isnt.  Scenes re not too big.
my system is a ryzen 5995xw with 256 gb ram + rtx 4090.

are you guys experiencing this?

I feel when i restart pc it works fine for a little while and then this sluggishness holds me down.  It wastes SO MUCH time.  I dont know if max, corona or windows or a combination of.

Yeah sluggish Max Editor (but also other Max UI) has been my bane for like forever. I've no idea what influences it either, but Corona Materials are more suspectable to it than for example MaxPhysicalMaterial which is instantaneous. And big PCs, Threadrippers esp. even further.

There are host of things that can (potentially only and often in specific circumstances) help:

- running High Performance or better, Ultimate Performance power plan.
- turning off almost every real-time protection, esp. Control Flow Guard. Or at minimum, making exception for 3dsMax.exe.
- yes it seems bizarre and I haven't done it in past either, but restarting 3dsMax and Windows itself from time to time.
- Turning sufficient amount of cores in Corona Setting off for IR. But I have tried turning off half the cores and the benefits are often less than ideal.
- This will cost performance even more, but I am running Threadrippers without SMT (Hyperthreading). From 128 Threads to 64 Threads is roughly 25perc. loss of multi-threaded rendering performance. But in my case, it does make almost every 3ds Max related performance better.

But yeah, outside of that, it's a mystery to me. As you say, ENDLESS waste of time.

I am not sure if the issue is getting worse, or just everything else is getting better and this sticks up like sore thumb.
Maybe we're just used to our smooth smart phones..

im glad im not the only one.... surely Corona devs could potentially look into this?  Its a major bottle neck which hinders the creative process as it introduces frustration from a technical point of view.  It may well be a max thing, but as you said the maxphysical material works instantaneously.  Its been over 10 years and i still find myself doing things like restarting/ removing animation layers, cleaning the scene and in extreme times reinstalling max and at worst, formatting the pc lol.... which isnt a bad thing from time to time.....

thanks for the tips - i also stumbled across what they call the QT TRICK - have you heard of this?  refer to this link:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/stackthis/posts/1624099071269916/

i havent noticed a different (maybe im doing it wrong) - have a go and let me know if it works for you.

PS - i also noticed the latest windows update, the right click context menu appears to be slower with my UI crap - theyre not helping either!

I've had 3dsMax get sluggish on me after I do an alt+W to see all my viewports. Before I do that, 3dsMax operates smoothly, even with a complex file. But after I do that, anything I do leads to a 1-2 second lag.

Thanks Juraj for pointing Control Flow Guard, I've never heard of it and it was on on my machine.

I'm experiencing the same slowdowns here on Max 2023 and Corona 10HF2.

I've never tried Fstorm, and I love Corona except for two or three options that I really liked in VRay, especially the VRayToon effect, which is sorely lacking in Corona, but here's an interesting video that explains that Fstorm is faster than Corona in IR and shows Corona's lack of responsiveness (look at 1mn40s):

It's true that if the devs could improve the responsiveness of Corona, it would be a major advancement to focus on the artistic side instead of wasting time waiting for the machine's response.

Same here!

I experience an instant and significant performance drop when using "show all viewports." I mainly skipped Corona 10 and installed Corona 11 a few days ago. Yesterday, I opened a relatively simple scene created with Corona 9, then pressed ALT+W (show all viewports). The viewport performance dropped dramatically, in my case, from 50 to 1-3 FPS (CPU usage when rotating viewport goes up to 28%). I tested this on 3ds Max 2022 and 2024 with fresh ENU folders and default viewport texture resolutions.

I took some actions to understand where the problem lies:
-Changing the viewport from perspective to other views in a single window (left top corner) does not result in a performance drop.
-Changing viewport settings and texture resolutions does not help. Even with bounding box mode, I still experience 1-3 FPS.
-Importing the scene into a new one doesn't change the result. The scene is laggy from the beginning.

Currently, I don't have time for further investigations and tests, so I need to revert to the previous version (I will try Corona 10HF3 first) and finish the project.

Best Regards

UPD: installed Corona 10 HF3:
- when performing alt+W to see all my viewports, max freezes for 1-2 sec for one time (as usual) but overall viewport performance does not drop as in Corona 11. So I can continue to work with ~50 FPS

So the issue would be related to Corona 11? I don't have any particular problem when I display all viewports with Alt+W under Corona 10HF2.

Hi,

I have corrected my original message to be more clear.
With relatively large scenes, it is common to experience a one-time 1-2 second freeze when performing ALT+W, so I described this as normal behavior. With Corona 10HF3, I have no problems with viewport performance at all. After one-time 1-2 second freeze I have my 50 FPS again. With Corona 11 I have 1-3 FPS.

Best Regards

The same goes for me. I didn't have any lingering issues with C10. I'd have a 1-2 second lag on occasion, but nothing persistent like I'm experiencing with C11.

With C11, the only way to fix it is to restart Max completely. I've even disabled Alt+W for the time being so I don't unintentionally show all viewports.

@brr @John.McWaters could you guys please contact us about this at https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/requests/new and ideally attach a sample scene (with all textures and assets) where this can be reproduced?

Also, if you have Scatter in your scene, it may be the culprit. There was a bug where isolating a Scatter object would cause a massive slowdown. You are describing something a bit different, but maybe it is related to Scatter as well? Just guessing for now.
That issue is fixed in the newest daily, so if you have the time you can test it out: https://forum.corona-renderer.com/index.php?topic=41598.0

Thanks in advance and if we get a sample scene we should be able to fix it or at least find out what is causing the slowdown.

Hello Maru,
I can provide only a stripped-down version of the scene and need to ensure first that the bug will be there. I think I can check it at the end of the week. Regarding the scatter- I have scatterring in the scene, in latest scatter version(from corona 11) - I have uninstalled Corona 11 but left the latest scatter version and have no performance issues with Corona 10 HF3.

Same goes for me. I can provide a stripped-down version, but I will insure the issue still persists in the stripped down version before I send it on.

In my personal opinion, Corona after 3dsmax update to 2024.2 is practically unusable.
In particular, Forest Pack scenes done before Corona 11 and 3dsmax 2024.2.

- Material Editor - non-stop stutters (2-5 seconds)
- 2D Pan Zoom does not work
Edit : Actually it wont work when you create new viewports tab when locked view for rendering
- Isolation freezes 3dsmax for 5+ seconds
Edit : Its much better in Dailybuild
- corona sun changes position after opening file
- overal ui  performance is very  bad.

Funny thing is i recently tested FStorm and Material Editior works like charm.
