Hi Guys,

i've tested vs material and..
I found that the difference between a material Physical and a material Legacy, despite the parameters being identical, is huge. Can anyone explain to me why material Physical looks washed out and free of occlusion? Also the reflections and tones look better to me in the legacy.

I notice another problem that the scene parsing time is very high in a Ryzen 7950x with 42sec of parsing and 30 seconds of rendering to reach 4,5% noise, in addition to the fact that to load the preview of the materials the machine takes a long time.

tnx in advance @a ll

Hi, thanks for the file. I have rendered both and am not seeing much of a difference at all. I removed your pass and noise limits and just set both to render for 5mins each.

Maybe I expressed myself badly, I'm not talking about the render time of the scene, but the time it takes for parsing is very long for me despite having a 7950x with 128gb of ram (42 seconds of parsing for me.. you have 9seconds ufffff). Maybe there are compatibility issues or bugs with these "new" processors? I also add that the preview of the material in the slot is really slow, sometimes even 20 seconds to see the updated material. Furthermore, the main problem of the scene I uploaded is on the reflection and rendering of the material between Physical and Legacy: the same parameters lead to a different rendering, and in the physical the material is much more washed out.

Looking at the images, I wouldn't say it's washed our, or a difference in AO - looks like a difference in the Fresnel falloff of reflections. AFAIK the new Physical Material is more physically accurate in such calculations. If you prefer the look of the Legacy, it's still there for use, or you could introduce some falloff yourself to IOR or Glossiness/Roughness.

Thanks Thomas, while regarding the much longer than normal parsing times on my 7950x there are updates (impossible for me to take 40 seconds against 9 for Beanz, given the performance of my machine it should be the other way around)? The same also applies to the preview time of the material in the slot as soon as I load a new texture that takes a long time to update in its preview.

The parsing time I will have to leave to the support and dev folks to follow up on. Which precise daily build are you using btw?

The differences between the Legacy and Physical Mtl are expected. The Physical Mtl is more physically-correct. For example, it always has some reflectivity, like all materials in real life. It also has some bugfixes and other improvements compared to the Legacy Mtl.
But... if you don't like it, you can still use the Legacy Mtl - it will render just fine.

About parsing - my first question would be: how exactly are your assets loaded into your scene? Are they proxies or geometry directly in the scene? If they are proxies, or if they are loaded from some external location some other way, are they by any chance placed on a network drive or some other kind of shared folder? Google Drive? Dropbox?

The scene (my parsing 40sec vs beanz 9sec) is exactly the one uploaded for testing. Files are all resident in local hd nvme m.2 pcie 4.0, no proxy in this scene. To give you a pratical example, with a minute of rendering I arrive at a noise of 1.6% vs 5min of beanz with 2.6%.
