Displacement does work on the selections. The problem most likely stems from having another material below that don't have any displacement. Corona takes the first materials displacement only. What you can do is to make multiple selections: for the areas affected and for those without displacement.

And there will still be the issue of the "torn mesh".
Displacement on polygon selections and stacking, in general, are still pretty incomplete/buggy. I hope for some fixes with the Beta 2 cycle.

Yup, that still is a problem. In Max, it's fixed. Unfortunately, the provided solution doesn't apply to C4D.
But depending on what you do in the scene, it still could work.
