+1 for not agreeing with the “if people aren’t complaining then it must be ok”.

In this instance I can at least see why it was done but sometimes we just assume it works.

Sometimes it’s a stupid thing like uvw randomisation doesn’t work with certain shader setups. You’ll spend an age dicking around and then eventual give up and fudge it and assume that it must be user error.

Thoughts on this? Here's that photo again but without any built in make-it-look-nice profile from Canon (I opened it in RawDigger). This is closer to the VFB output.

If you added one of the Kim Amland LUTs to your frame buffer then you'd be closer to comparing apples with apples. I think those LUTs are derived from a Canon profile.

Thanks.
The photo I attached on the first post is pointing towards the sun.

Is that definitely the sun, or a cloud? I've found the sky model to be pretty close to photos that I've taken - attached are some raws as they appear by default in ACR. Perhaps in cool climates the halo is a bit smaller? New Zealand in winter vs Australia in summer.

Ok yep that makes sense, thanks.

There are two files that start with windows that belong to the Corona installation. "chaos license server supervisor" and "chaos unified login supervisor".
Those were disabled, probably by the IT guy, and was making Max startup much slower. Enabling them solves the issue.

Can you explain this more? It may be useful for others with slow startups.

I'd appreciate if you can contact them and see if you can help.

If Chaos simply delete an integral part of the renderer rather than having a legacy component then surely you'd expect it's going to blow up users pipelines.

[Max] Feature Requests / Re: Tonemapping & Maxscript
« on: 2022-11-16, 22:43:04 »
For years I've used a render manager Vexus, and on release of C8 my workflow was broken without warning. It took me weeks to arrive at having a working Maxscript to fudge around this.

And FYI my workflow for frame buffer settings went from attachment A, to attachment B.

Picture 15 renders on a project with an average of three options for each - that's me tweaking 45 versions of the maxscript on attachment B. Factor in human errors and the associated re-rendering. It's created a massive ball ache.

And the tonemapping is not in a state that the developers want to touch it. The simplest way to implement this as I see it is to allow maxscript to the load and save buttons.

Just sharing my pain.

p.s. It was awesome shortly after to received the price hike too, thanks for that.

Can I use Maxscript to control the VFB in the following way:

1) Hit Save on the Tonemapping settings and save out to a location determined in the maxscript.
2) Load the the saved settings from a location determined in the maxscript?

You will be able to switch to to yearly pricing to more or less keep the current price

"More or less" How did you arrive at that one Ondra?

You're forcing me to switch to yearly subscription to pay 40% extra per month to avoid a 280% price increase.

But I could downgrade to solo - good one!

[Max] I need help! / Re: UVW Randomizer Issue
« on: 2022-09-28, 10:01:04 »
I often randomise the rotation of wood but with a Step value of 180.

Good point, but i think that wouldn't mess normal map, since XYZ coordinates would still match UVW.

Yeah I don't see the problem with randomizing the normal map in conjunction with the other maps.

Still a pain in the but that displacement doesn't line up properly.

[Max] I need help! / Re: Best Max system units for Corona?
« on: 2022-09-23, 01:58:08 »
If you for example always work on residential interiors, or products etc, then mm would be a good system unit.

But if you work on large exterior masterplans then you'll run into viewport issues when navigating your scene if system units are set to mm (and vice versa). So m in this case would be better.

If you work on both very large and very small scenes then somewhere in between is better, so I use cm.

Inches in theory would be better as it's even more 'in-between' mm & m, but I tried it a long time ago and it created some stupid problems so you should definitely avoid mixing imperial system units with metric scene units.

I've found for camera matching, the best way to get the specs from photos is to use exiftool. https://exiftool.org/

Drag a raw file onto the software icon and it gives you heaps of hidden metadata including the (horizontal) FOV.

And FYI if you're ever given a focal length that says 35mm equivalent, then you can leave your 3DS Max Film width at it's default 36mm. (the 35mm equivalent refers to the vertical dimension of film including the border, but it's still 36mm wide - a little confusing).
There's a big caveat though - if the photo was taken in Portrait, then whilst the focal length obviously remains the same, the film width in Max needs to be changed to 24mm (as the 35mm equivalent Full frame sensor is 36x24mm, so if you rotate the camera 90 degrees then (in Max) 24mm becomes the horizontal width of the sensor).

Example (from Mavic 3 I think?):
