Scrim lighting is a widely used technique among professional photographers, but, it's a lighting technique commonly unknown to the majority of 3D artists because up until now it was nearly impossible to re-create.
Scrim lighting was recently added in HDR Light Studio 8, a lighting software with a plugin available for 3ds Max and Corona renderer. Mimicking real-world studio lighting set-ups, letting you light 3D models in the same way you would direct a photo shoot, creating subtle, beautiful effects that wouldn't be possible with standard gradients or 'softboxes'.
