Hello Ondra,
I try to explain you this "bug" (maybe it's 3ds max limit)
I'm working for a big apartment, 3 bedroom, 2 kitchen etc...
Everything is ok, before to add many books

(*) I have 10 different varieties (Modern, Architecture, Old book etc...)
(*) Every varieties has 15 books inside. In total, 150 different books.
(*) Every variety has a multi sub-object material, with, inside, 15 sub-material (one for each covers)
(*) Covers resolution are about 1K

Ok, After this addition (the books) the material editor is be very slow.

For example, if the material editor is clean (24 white balls)
and I want to pick a book sub-object material, I have to wait 1 minutes, before Corona updates the material editor with one multi sub-object.
And it's not related about MEdit quality.
Often, now, when I want to create new Corona material, 3ds max crashes.

If I delete the 150 book and I pick a different sub-object material (for example, the bed), MEdit  is not very fast, but it's ok, because the scene is complex.

Do you have  suggestions?

THANKS!

Yes, the same. And, if in the merged file I delete all books, the MEdit will return usable.
It's repeatable error. If you want, I can record a video.

The temporary solution is to attach the book in meshes and convert in proxy. Now the MEdit speed is a bit better.

It's a commercial product. This is the screen shot.
But, as I wrote, it's very easy shader. A lot of covers (diffuse map) with a little glossy reflection.
Now, as you can see, the books are groups of proxy.
But, before, they were a single, mesh book. And the MEdit was very slow.
So, I don' t know if it's a 3ds max limit, or Corona problem.

But I have a lot, a lot multi sub-object materials fro the books.
Also the scene is big. Not very big, but heavy.
And, many material maps are 4k (wood, floor etc).
But, after to convert in proxy, now it's better. =)

Detach as object (Soulburn script) and then clean multimaterial? (mean is better to have a lot of singlematerial or a mutimaterial with lots of materials inside?).
What i do with Corona My Corona post of random stuff rendering

I don't know. Maybe it's better to have a lot of single minerals (but it's worse for MEdit organization). But I haven't time to test.

Can you try it with the latest daily? The issue may be gone with some recent bugfixes
